Head coach Harry Litwack will start his 19th season as head coach with an excellent chance of repeating as champions. The only starting letterman lost was Tom Wieczerak a 6-2 guard with a 15.8 scoring average. Although his loss will be hard to overcome two rising sophomores from the freshman squad show great promise. They are Scott Asay who stands 6-0 and has a 20.4 scoring average and Chris Johnston who also stands 6-0 and has a 14.3 scoring clip. Returning are the top five scorers of last year and a trio of sophomores that could mean the difference between mediocrity and excellence. s key aple Owls inese upstarts will join an ex perienced varsity squad that has better than average rebounding height. "We should be a little tougher under the boards because our big men now have varsity ex perience," commented Litwack. Tinkertoy-built Lee Tress is one of the trio of big men. He stands 6-7 and was the leading rebounder with 11.2 per game. His scoring average of 15.1 marks him as a man to watch. Ollie Johnson and Jim Feneli are the other two of the trio. They stand at 6-5 and 6-4, respectively, and between them have a 9.6 rebounding average. "We'll be versatile enough to do a lot of things which we haven't been able to do in the past." Last year's team was sophomore laden, so the added experience will be helpful. Charles Lipscomb, a 6-6 junior, will operate in the pivot. Lipscomb led the team in rebounding last season, hauling in an average of 10.4 per game. He will be sharing the board duties with sophomores John Payne, 6-6, Allen Bristow, 6-7, and Mike McKelvy, 6-8. Bristow is almost a sure starter at one of the forward spots, while the presence of Payne and redshirt McKelvy will undoubtedly aid the reboun ding game. The scoring chores may fall into the hands of one person, 6-1 senior guard Loyd King. King averaged 19.3 points per game last season, and according to Shannon, "There aren't too many any better than him." Wayne Lockett will probably join King in the backcourt. He may get some competition from juniors Bill McNeer and Randy Minix. McNeer was the team's fourth highest scorer in 1969-70, averaging 9.3 points per contest. The only other spot that is almost entirely up for grabs is that of Bristow's mate at forward, Tommy Trice, who scored 10.3 points a game last year, and Darwin Pippin, both juniors, will try to avoid the pressure put oi them by sophs McKelvy and Payne.
