Add 6-9 reshirt Bob Lynn and 6-8 George Trapp and all-conference Billy Jankans and you get another banner season. Back is 6-7 Corky Calhoun who hit at a 14.6 rate last year and 6-8 Bob Morse who scored at 15.9. Guard is strong with Steve Bilsky. a 15.5 scorer, and David Wohl. a 14.0 shooter. Center Jim Wolf's speciality is defense but the big center may have his job snatched away by record breaking frosh ace Phil Hankinson, who stands 6-8. 11arguette and Dean 'The Dream" Meminger head the second ten. Close behind is New Mexico State despite having only one starter returning. Utah Stale lost to UCLA in the Western Regionals last year and return All America Marv Roberts. UCLA has had things pretty much their own way the past seven years-six titles-but this year things may be different. Jerry Kroll and Doug Cook were at Davidson. the Wildcats won 73 games and lost only 13, including three trips to the NCAA playoffs. Now they are gone and the situation at Davidson is one of uncertainty. They are not ex pected to be the national power they have been in the past. but they are still rated the best in the Southern Conference. To make matters worse Brian Adrian will be out four to eight weeks with a knee injury suffered in practice. Last year Adrian was selected All Southern Conference and won other honors as a sophomore, scoring 20.2 points per game. When he returns he is e xpected to start at guard. "Right now we have five boys that are fighting for starting positions." Coach Terry Holland said. "We lost Adrian last week, that was a rough blow, but we have been pleased with our team play." Holland said the seven fighting for starting jobs are seniors Steve Kirley, Duncan Postma, and Ronnie Steizer; juniors Eric Minkin, and Lester Strong and sophomores John Pecorak and Joe Sutter. Big Steve Kirly started in late season and gave the Wildcat's a boost with his heft under the boards, his good corner shots and his defensive tenacity. Holland said he has really been impressed with Kirly, who he says must develop into a scoring threat. Eric Minkin a 6-8 junior is ex pected to be one of the top players in the conference. "Minkin has been looking much str-onger. and I shot 1 blocks shot of Gamecock's ar at the Coliseum. faces building quicker. " Holland said. "He is a very physical player and he should be able to give us the rebounding to establish our running game. At the same thne. I feel he must improveA his inside play. I think he's all conference material." Pecorak a 6-6 sophomore and Ronnie Stelzer, a scrappy little fellow, are the other two expected starters. After losing Maloy, Kroll and Cook to graduation and Adrian to an injury, our offensive game worried me. But we have been looking pretty good and am ex pecting to have a good season." "The last two years the personnel we have had has limited Kirly's role as a scorer," Holland said. "But he has a good shot from the corner and he did average better then 24 points for us as a freshman."
