Ind.. has gained this recognition in
a conference which has graduated
the number one draft choice and
all time NCAA scoring champ,
"Pistol Pete" Maravich form LSU
and Dan Issel, a first team All
America from SEC champ Ken
tucky.
"I would say that John is one of
the best players the SEC has ever
had." said Lynn. "John has shown
he belongs right up there with the
best in the nation."
Because of lack of consistency
from Auburn shooters last year
Mengelt had to shoulder much of
the scoring load. "I feel John will
be able to work more on his overall
game this year. " Lynn said. "We
have had some position changes
and some better shooters than last
year.
Lynn's reference to 'position
changes' is to the addition of sixth
man Al Leapheart, a 6-10 junior
who came on strong at the con
clusion of last season, and 6-10
redhirt sophomore Tom Bardin.
Outstanding sophomore Jim
Retseck 6-9, Ralph Smith, a 6-7
sophomore. 6-4 Dan Kirkland and
veteran junior, 6-5 Tim Ashwill will
be battling for a starting forward
position. The front line is bare and
up for grabs due to graduation and
the switching of Henry Harris to
guard.
"Harris played at the forward
spot last season," commented
Lynn. "He and Mengelt are two
aggressive athletes and should
give us the best tuckcourt com
bination in the SEC."
Hacking up Mengelt and Harris
will be senior Jimmy Walker, 6-3,
and two very promising
sophomores in 6-1 Bobby Nix and
Gary England. 6-3, who averaged
16.4 ppg as a frosh.
Pat Cowart. a 6-4 senior, Mike
Pugh. a sophomore from down
town Auburn. and Greg Austin a 6
2 junior round out the squad.
Though Coach Lynn has ex
cellent personnel to work with this
year. much of the players are
sophomores. "You never know
how a sophomore will act under the
strain of a contest until he has
played against another team,"
lynn said.
Youth could be the Tigers'
biggest problem this winter.
