UNC Scott 1 By Bil,Y MOORE Sports Writer When UNC takes the court in their first game this year it will mark the first time in three years that they will be without the ser vices of Charlie Scott. Scott led the offensive team for the Tarheels and was the big gun for two years. Last year he led the ACC in scoring with an average of 27 points a game. A player of this character is hard to replace, but UNC has a fine group of returning veterans and some talented sophomores who could make the situation a little brighter. Heading the list of returnees is Lee Dedmon, who led last year's team in rebounding with 235 in 25 games. The 6-11, 214 pound center also averaged 13.8 points per game. Head Coach Dean Smith said, "Lee's a very aggressive player with a tendency to foul, but we feel he has overcome this problem." Also returning is 6-6 guard Dennis Wuycik who finished second in scoring last year behind Scott with a 14 point average. Smith is counting on Wuycik to take up the scoring slack left by the graduation of Scott. One of the returnees from last year's teams may be destined to be one of the top guards in the ACC. This player is Bill Chamberlain, who was slowed down last year by a variety of injuries and illnesses but still managed to average 11.5 points a game. These three players will be key men in the frontcourt but even they will have to battle to win starting positions. Others in contention in the frontcourt will be top reserves from last year. 6-7 senior Dave Chadwick; 6-9 junior Craig Cor son; 6-9 senior Don Eggleston and a rising sophomore. 6-8 Donn Johnston. Johnston. although bothered by a late season injury, averaged 17.7 for the Tar Heel freshman team last season. He is expected to be a vital cog in the Tar Heel express this year. "We don't feel that we will lose much in rebounding with Johnston in the cast." Smith says. "Scott was a terrific rebounder, but we hope that Johnston can take up the slack." In the backcourt UNC returns four lettermen. They are 6-1 Dale Gipple, 6-2 Steve Previs; 6-4 Kim Huband and 6-0 Richard Tuttle. All have had game experience and could land a starting berth at the guard position. He un derwent an operation for a slipped disc. But coaches are optimistic that he will be ready to go at full speed in the near future. "Certainly this team and the coaching staff will be faced with a great challenge." Smith says. After sweeping an un precedented three straight ACC and Eastern Regional titles, UNC compiled a 18-9 record last year. They defeated ACC champion N. C. State twice last year and earned a bid to the National Invitational Tournament in New York. Smith said he woufd be ex tremely disappointed if his team finished in the second division.
