The current topic is "Drugs and
Drug Abuse." Available are
pamphlets and a list of the books
on reserve concerning drugs.

The University chaplains
recently sent out phone stickers
with the numbers of the various
counseling services open to
students on it.
Jerry Hammett of the Methodist
Center said that there are several
aids open to students. "My part
was just to let them know."
One of the major bureaus listed
is the Columbia area "hot line."
This is a number that anyone in the
area can call to receive trained
counseling. It has been estimated
that around 4,000 people used this
service since it's establishment
last summer.
The University's Psychological
Service Center specializes in group
and individual psycotherapy,
marital and premarital coun
seling, and diagnostic evaluation.
They hope to serve as a referral
center for the hot line.

When the University acquired some property across the
street from Capstone, a lady who had lived in one of the
houses for 35 years moved out. But last week, she returnd to
the house to pick some of the flowers she had grown while
she lived there.

It's now a $10 fine to leave your keys in your car, as a
student recently found out. He returned to his car to find
that he not only had a ticket for leaving the keys in the car,
but he had also locked the doors.
Mysterious woman
There's a woman named Doris living on the 7th floor of
Moore Dorm, but she's a pigeon. Nesting on the porch of
Doug Williams and Mark Laux, the pigeon made her nest of
broom straw and proceeded to kay two eggs in it. Mark and
Doug feed the bird bread, popcorn, peanuts, and peanut
butter cookies.

Doctors now know why "speed"
kills.
The finding of a lethal blood
vessel disease associated with the
use of "Speed" (methedrine) has
been reported by a team of
physicians at the Los Angeles
County-University of Southern
California Medical Center.
Called necrotizing angitis, the
disease can cause a fatal blockage
of the arteries leading to vital
organs. Dr. B. Philip Citron, who
headed the research team, said
methedrine causes an inflamation
in the arteries. With healing,
scarring results which blocks the
blood vessels. Me organ mnst

generally the kidney, leading to
renal failure and death.
The report appeared in the
November issue of the New
England Journal of Medicine, 'e
original study involved 14 patients
stricken with the disease, four of
whom died. Dr. Citron estimated
that between ten and twenty per
cent of persons shooting speed may
develop the disease. He added that
there is no correlation between
how long one takes methedrine and
thie degree of the disease.
