If you are over 40, have low bloo(
sugar, or an underactive thyroid
you will love "On A Clear Day.'
Once again, the cinema ha
taken a fine stage play and made I
a poor film.
The reasons why "On A Cleai
Day" is a poor film are multiple
The casting is poor. The charac
terization of Barbara Streisand aj
Daisy Gamble, the girl lead is no
bad, but from there on it's all dowr
hill. Yves Montand is a fairly gooc
Dr. Marc Chabot, but the script dic
not afford the role enough room t<
prove its credibility.
Aside from the poor casting, "Or
A Clear Day" is an anachronism
Tbe era of the fantasy-musical i
long dead. The main problem witt
this film is that it never had i
chance to begin with.
The transformation from stagi
to screen is a difficult one anc
there are simply some types ol
plays that cannot .help but suffej
in the transformation, "On A Cleai
Day" is one of them.
On the stage, it is perfectil
acceptable to present a work tha
deals with the fantastic. Th4
unreality does not harm it and it
some plays, works well for it.
Unlike the stage, the screen doei
not tolerate fantasy unless it is tie(
firmly to what is real. "On A Cleai
Day" could not, at its best, hav4
ever hoped to be more than i
mildly enjoyable farce.
On the stage, due to the greatei

tolerance of that milieu, "On A
Clear Day" could be touching,
warm and witty, as well as being
totally fantastic and unreal. The
cinema does not afford the same
potential.
In all fairness to the film, It is
somewhat entertaining. Streisand
is of course great whenever she
opens her mouth to sing and if one
stretches it, he may even get
somewhat involved in the
ridiculous plot.
On the other hand, if you enjoy
films of the old school, films like
"Airport" and "An Affair to
Remember," you'll be right at
home with "On A Clear Day." "On
A Clear Day" is filled with human
drama. The only rub is that the
type of human drama that it is
filled with never happens.
"On A Clear Day" spelled out its
own epitaph when, in a fit of
emotion, Yeves Montand cries "Oh
God, why didn't you make woman
first, while you were fresh!" All d
that can be added is, why wasn't
this film made 30 years ago when d
the technique was fresh? 0

Walk through the door, above
which hangs a flashing sign
reading "Adult Peep Show" and
you see a panorama of magazines,
paperbacks and films.
This is not 42nd Street but
Columbia's Assembly Street. The
magazines are not the girlie-book
type, but are the equal of anything
that can be found on the much
heralded shelves of 42nd Street,
New York, New York.
Seeing is believing, and if you
don't believe that hard-core porno
has finally come to the sweet
South, take five minutes of your
next lunch hour to browse through
the Assembly Street shop.
"Adult Peep Show" has
something for everyone. If you like
nudes, there are plenty of them
posed in every conceivable style. If
your hangup is films, "Adult Peep
Show" has them too. If you tend
towards the "Boys in the Band,"
once again, you're in luck.
According to the manager.
"Adult Peep Show" is doing well

UN8OGGING THE BUDGET
The student senate will meet in
special session today to consider
the 1970-71 SGA budget.
The senate bogged down in
debate last week and adjourned to
pro-ide time for senators to
examine specific items listed in the
budget.
The final budget was not sub
mitted to senate members prior to
last Wednesday's session and
several senators complained over
the lack of sufficient time to study
the bill.

financially. The only problem
seems to be the local authorities'
dismay at the shop's bill of fare.
"Adult Peep Show" was closed
last Monday and its manager
arrested on a felony. After posting
a $2,000 bond, the porno shop was
re-opened pending the outcome of
the trial.
If the shop's manager is worried,
he hides it well. Confident that the
Supreme Court would uphold his
right to sell the type publications
exhibited at "Adult Peep Show,"
4e considers business to be nor
mal.
"Peep Show's" manager says
most of his sales are to middle
aged men dressed in suits.
Students come to browse but don't
want to spend money for the ex
pensive books.
"To preach morality is the job of
the churches, legislating is not,"
he said.
There is presently a lot of
pressure in Columbia to close
'Adult Peep Show." Many leading
citizens have been offended by the
-display of "dirty books" right here

empty beer cans, models of parts
of human bodies colored with
illustrations of various fuods.
Shop
in the All-American City. The only
question is who dictates the laws.
The Supreme Court has ap
proved all the magazines sold at
the shop and one must be 18 to
enter "Peep Show."
Approval of the "Peep Show's"
merchandise is of no consequence.
The only question is whether the
sale of such material is illegal.
Apparently, city efforts to close
the shop have failed. It might be
interesting to watch the next move.
After all, how many places can be
closed as public nuisances? -
