quarterback Bobby Scott took a
tremendous shot from Jimmy
Poston, and was forced to exit.
But Dennis Chadwick, a little
known sophomore quarterback,
came in and drove the Vols from
the Carolina 42 to the 15, setting the
stage for Hunt's climactic score.
After Tommy Suggs had a pass
intercepted by Tim Priest with
three minutes gone In the opening
period, Tennessee moved 39 yards
in just three plays. Scott hit
sophomore end Stan Trott for a 32
yard touchdown, with Hunt adding
the conversion.
Carolina's ensuing drive stalled
and Billy Parker was forced to
punt. Bobby Majors returned the
kick 32 yards to the USC 18, and
three plays later, Hunt kicked a 31
yard field goal to increase the UT
advantage to 10-0.
But Dick Harris, who has daz
zled fans everywhere with his
prowess on kick and punt returns,
raced 68 yards with the Vol kick, to
the UT 26. When three running

sailed a 39 yard field goal througi
the uprights.
What turned out to be a very
crucial miscue took place late in
the opening stanza. Carolina took
possession on the USC 31 with 4:18
to go. Suggs hit Tom Trevellian,
Mike Haggard and Doug Hamrick
for successive first downs.
After Tommy Simmons gained
15 yards on two rushes to the Vol
nine, tackle Frank Howell hit
Chuck Mimms, jarring the ball
lose, and Jackie Walker recovered.
The second quarter was
highlighted by Walker's in
terception of a Suggs' aerial for a
touchdown. But the Gamecock
quarterback was clipped in his
pursuit of Walker so the score was
nullified.
A 27-yard field goal attempt by
Hunt sailed of f to the right, early in
the fourth quarter and USC took
over at their own 20. Suggs, who
had been replaced in the third
quarter by Jackie Young, came
back into the game to direct the
offense.
The little quarterback connected
with Jackie Brown for 48 yards on
a picture perfect pass play. After
Mimms netted six yards over
center, Suggs was unable to find an
open receiver, and scrambled
eight yards for a first down.
Simmons carried three times for
another first at the Vol nine. And
on a third and goal situation from
the three he burst over left tackle
for the touchdown.
Suggs hit Jimmy Mitchell for the
two point conversion and Carolina
led for the first time, 11-10.

But the Vols refused to buckle.
Tommy Bell's kickoff was
returned 49 yards to the US% 44 by
Kevin Milam. Four plays later,
Scott hit Curt Watson, who was
wide open on the right sideline, for
a 20 yard score. Hunt's PAT gave
UT a 17-11 lead with 6:02 left.
Once again, Suggs answered the
challenge. Following three onside
kick attempts, he hit Mitchell, who
made a leaping grab for a 61 yard
scoring play. DuPre's conversion
put the Gamecocks ahead 18-17 but
4:56 remained to be played.
Bo Davies came up with his
eighth interception of the year at
the USC one yard line after
Chadwick had replaced Scott.
Three rushes by Simmons failed to
get a first down and the Vols took
over at the USC 42 after a Parker
punt.
On the Vols first play Steve
Wold, who was playing the fullback
spot usually manned by Curt
Watson, gained 22 yards on a draw
play, that was after labeled by both
coaches as the game's big play. A
pass interference penalty gave UT
a first down at the Carolina 16.
Watson rushed for one yard, and
a Chadwick pass fell incomplete.
With 15 second remaining, Hunt
came onto the field. Four seconds
later, it was all over.
"Coach Battle just told me to
kick it up and put it through," Hunt
recalled. "It was just a question of
concentration."
Scott, who suffered a shoulder
bruise as a result of his collision
with Poston, revealed that the
scoring ,pass to Watson had been
dictated by the previous play.
"I threw to Lester (McClain) on
the play before that. Curt came
back in the huddle and said he was
wide open, so I hit him on the next
play. We used that same play to
score twice last year against South
Carolina."
Watson said that he "had trouble
finding the holes. I didn't have a
good day rushing. The competition
was really tough."
Carolina's ability to establish a
running game did not surprise
linebacker Jackie Walker. "We
