They yell about the soldiers who affront coeds with catcalls and physical violence. Certainly the rapists should be punished, but we're hitting at the effect, not the underlying cause. We live In a society that condones violence all over the world. Our military is killing and being ki,lled daily all over the world. Cops kill and beat students, Black Panthers and others. Every three or four days a cop is killed somewhere in the United States. We see or hear of violence daily, either personally or through a news medium. We accept this violence as a part of our existence. We condone war in Vietnam. Part of that Is training young men and boys to be killing - ' machines. We mutilate their minds by forcing them into violent actions. Now If we alienate these trained fighters by ignoring their existence, by refusing to allow them in our stores, clubs and .homes, refusing to allow them the courtesies we show to civilians, we put what we've done in a different frame of reference. We haven't condoned just training people to protect us, we have condoned the creation of ogres that are not fit to live beside us. We have no right to bitch about violent acts of alienated human beings unless we do what we can to assure them that we are not Frankensteins who have created a monster and find it too ugly to have around. What we should be about, if we must pour men into molds of violence, is to alleviate the causes of their very human pains before that violence turns on us. Whoever wrote the l*er was obviously misinftrmed, and we would like to supply the correct information and clarification. It is true that the band Is in debt, but the stated figure of $10,000 is grossly exaggerated. Before any trips were scheduled, a financial problem was anticipated as well as a solution. The Carolina Band Club (CBC) was chartered on July 30, 1970, by the state of South Carolina as an incorporated, non-profit organization. The purpose of the CBC is to assist the functioning and financing of the USC Bands. This includes solicitation of CBC membership and the sale of Carolink Bands recordings. Funds are to be used to benefit the students directly through band scholarships, trips, equipment, uniforms, and tours. If for some unforeseen reason the CBC is not successful in erasing the band's debts, Mr. Wahl, director of bands, will remain at the University working as hard as ever to improve the band and raise money to run it, for it does take much financial support to maintain a "big time" operation. He is not a man who would leave a job unfinished. Whether or not he needs the position as director of bands is his personal business, and should not be related to other issues. The main point is that the Carolina Bands need him. It is not unusual to be in debt if one examines the financial stan dings'of most large projects today. Look on campus at all the new buildings that are not paid for as of yet. Most people naturally assume that these debts will be paid eventually, and in all probability, they will be. The Carolina Mar ching Band has the same assumption about its debts. It should be clarified that the additional trips to New York and Atlanta tied in respectively with performances at the Maryland and Georgia football games. The extra trips not only provided educational benefits to the band members, but were also a tremendous boost to the prestige and reconition of the University and the state of South Carolina. It should be noted that the Carolina Bands are dedicated to the full support of university activities for which we have rehearsed in the rain, dark and cold for no academic credit what so ever. The USC- Bands have always been organstions to be proud of, and it is only logical that they should inprove every year. Next year's band should improve tremendously, but that should not deplete recognition of the fine job done this year or in years past. The band feels that the author of the letter owes an apology for writing about a subject of which he knows nothing. If this person is so concerned about our financial status, he may come by the band office at McMaster College and pick up a few CBC applications to give to his friends in order to help 'remedy the situation. Earl Davis, President Try McKissick Dear Miss Manning: I cannot let go unchallenged the unfounded charge made by sup pressed coeds Wells, Talmadge, Zachary, Winn, Sylvester, and Swan of poor and inadequate USC library resources on the Women's Rights Movement. It is heartening to see their thirst for greater knowledge, but if they expect that thirst to be quenched they ought to learn where the well-springs of knowledge are on the campus. Apparently none of the six has read the "Library Handbook." Had they done so they could have discovered (p. 6) that the Undergraduate Library, the specific library facility they were criticizing, is not intended to supply unlimited in formation on any topic. To better attain such a goal the Handbook refers the reader to McKissick Library, the major research library unit, which contains "a union catalog representing, with minor ex ceptions, all library holdings on campus" (p.6). Here they will find listed the specified item of their quest, Flexner's "Century of Struggle," which the library acquired in 1959, the year the work was published, and which is located in the open stacks of McKissick, not the Undergraduate Library.
