specifically for Elanor Flexner's
Century of Struggle: The Women's
Rights Movement in the U.S.,
which is recommended as required
reading for every U.S. college girl
by Betty Friedan, a leader in the
movement.
Not being able to find this, we
looked for other books concerning
women and found the library
terribly inadequate. Because of the
growing interest and need for
ducatn in this vital area, we feel
that U.S.C. owes its already
supressed coeds current literature
in this field.
This is not only an example of the
typically poor liby iry services, but
is also indicative of the lack of
concern for female rights on this
campus.

something, as shown by the
tremendous improvement in the
Carolina band. They now are one of
the largest bands in college, and, in
my opinion, one of the best.
Though Mr. Wahl may know how
to coordinate 250 individuals into a
harmonious group, he seems to
lack the talents to manage his band
financially. When the USC band
returns from the Clemson-USC
football game, they will be in debt
in excess of ten thousand dollars.
Even with inflation, this is a large
amount of money.
Even though Mr. Wahl had his
band in mind when he scheduled
trips to New York, Atlanta and
Clemson, the fact is, he does not
really neea his job as band
director. This is not meant as an
insult to Mr. Wahl, but he will not
be left with the burden of collecting
the funds if the band does not get
the money, before the year is out.
The problem could have been
eased early in the year if the band
had started a fund drive before
they spent money they never had.
I, for one, hope Mr. Wahl and the
band can come up with the money.
It would certainly be a blow to the
USC band and USC students to lose
a talented man like Mr. Ralph
Wahi.

Amidst the present surge of anti
militarism and anti-war feelings, I
would like to expound, not on the
horrors of war, or the draft
resistance movement, but on a
subject that is not often seen in
print. That subject is the treatment
of a man in the service on a per
sonal level.
As a Navy veteran, I feel
qualified to speak about the sub
ject, but I would like to state that i
am personally not against the
amintenance of the armed forces.
However, what I am against is
some of the military practices that
detract from a man's self-respect
and the respect he should have for
the service.
An example of this is the fun
pastime of standing on a pier in
dress uniform at midnight,
guarding one of the Navy's most
prozed possessions, a half-full
garbage can. Now some could say
that this act could build character
or discipline, but think of what it
could do for the mind! After
several nights like this, what kind
of thoughts does a man with a mind
begin to have, with the stench of
garbage swirling in his nostrils.
And for what purpose? Is someone
going to steal some garbage? Or
maybe they want the can.
Another point that I would like to
make is the totally unrealistic rate
of pay for a lower rated enlisted
man. What kind of attitude can a
man develop when he makes the
grand sum of approximately $140 a

allowance? The lower grades are
allotted $60 a month for a wife. But
a chief's wife gets considerably
more. Why? Does she eat more? Is
a lower enlisted man's wife any
different? Maybe chief's wife has a
higher social standard to keep up.
What goes through a man's mind
when all of a sudden the only thing
he can afford for his family is
substandard housing, if his wife
stays home with the children.
Do starvation wages increase a
man's respect for the service?
Then again we can look on the
favoritism shown by higer-ups in
the system, the elimination of
favorites from duty rosters, and
consistent "early offs" for the
chosen few, among other things.
Why is this done? Because of
favors rendered which have little
to do with the service. What can a
man do about it? Little if anything.
Does this increase respect for the
service? What does a man do when
a "higher up" puts him on his s
list because he doesn't like his hair
or his political attitudes or the kind
of car he drives or what he was in
-civilian life? Does his respect for
the service increase?
Yes, in many ways - the lower
enlisted man is a second class
citizen, during working and off
duty hours. It is up to us both to
understand his problems and, if
possible, to help. If there are
apathetic feelings toweard this
idea, then so be it, but don't
defame or demoralize a man in
uniform. He has enough problems
as it is.

While the alumni were in town
for the hranecoming festivities,
Athletic Director Paul Dietel
amounced' 'the initiation of a
special fund-raising drive to
provide $360,000 to purchase an
ak'tificial surface for our footbau
stadium. The validity of this ex
penditure has- received only
Jpited attention since the an
n6uncement was made.
This past Sunday, Nov. 1, 1970, a
tragedy occurred on our campus.
Student reaction to the event has
generated calls for better lighting
on the campus, especially in the
areas adjacent to housing facilities
for female students. In the
November 3 issue of The State an
unidentified University spokesman
stated that the estimated cost of
improved lighting would be
$300,000. Unfortunately, the
spokesman did not say when such
improvements would begin, or if
the estimated funds were
available.

at night.
Let's eliminate by illumination
all potentially hazardous areas of
the campus. It would make the job
of our campus security easier and
greatly reduce the anxieties of our
female students. Take corrective
action now, befoe another tragedy
occurs.
