The frst quarter was scorsiess as neither team could mount a sustained drive. Duane CarreU, the FSU punter, kept the Gamecocks deep in their own territory with his driving punts which ranged up to 50 yards. USC scored the first time they had- the ball In the second quarter on a five yard pass from Suggs to Billy Ray Rice. The drive covered 45 yards and Dupre's extra point made it 7-0. Tommy Warren who had lost his starting job to Gary Huff in the Florida game two weeks ago, was sitting on the bench observing his teams inability to move the ball. Billy Parker the USC punter kicked the ball to David Snell who returned the ball 51 yards to the Gamecocks 29 yard line. At this point FSU coach Bill Peterson decided to put Warren in the game. Warren responded by leading State to score on a 16 yard pass to Rhett Dawson. Barefooted placekicker Frank Fontes kicked the extra point to tie the score. Warren a serious young man felt he had to come through and said, "I'm just glad I got a chance to help our team win." FSU added another touchdown when Toni Bailey plunged one yard over a mass of Gamecocks to in sure the win for the Seminoles. The extra point made the score 21-7. The Gamecocks passing game was dampened by the intermittent rain which fell throughout the homecoming game. Suggs, who was off much of the night, was replaced by Jackie Young with almost six minutes remaining. Young resumed his act of coming in the game and leading his team to a score as he has. done several times this year. Young completed seven of 12 passes in leading USC to its second touchlown. The score came on a 14 yard pass to Doug Hamrick with just 48 second left in the game. The attempted two-pointed fell in complete. Warren ran off the field clut ching the game ball he so richly deserved. He summed up his ac tions by saying, "It was all in a day's work." Peterson was proud of his entire team but pointed out, "Our defense just played a great game." The FSU defense held the Gamecocks to just 58 yards rushing and 148 passing. Wallace was quick to point out that It wa a team effort. He -felt the tuning point was Snell's 51 yard punt return that set up the Seminoles first touchdown. On the whole Snell returned ten punts for 102 yards. He returned one punt 55 yards for a touchdown that was nullified by a clipping penalty.. Peterson said this was the first game his team had put it all together, "We hit hard on defense and made some clutch third down plays. "We had won only two of our first five games and felt it was time to get back on the winning side." Dietzel said, "State's defensive line just whipped our offensive line. "I felt our boys were ready to play maybe we were just too ready." FSU evened their record at 3-3 while USC's record dropped to 3-3-1 with four games left to play. Dietzel closed by saying bluntly, "State was a better football team tonight than we were." Dietzel announces campaign USC Athletic Director Paul Dietzel announced Sunday on WIS TV's Quarterback Show that a 'Carpet the Cockpit' campaign to raise $360,000 for synthetic turf for Carolina Stadium is underway. "We think that we have to have this carpet to have as good a facility as any other in the nation," Dietzel said. The turf will be sold by the yard at $36 a yard. State nudged Maryland with two field goals 6-0, Virginia thrashed William and Mary 33-6, and Duke got by Clemson 21-10. The Deamon Deacons, trailing 13-7 late in the fourth quarter and apparently out of the game never gave up, as junior quarterback Larry Russell engineered a beautiful 93 yard touchdown drive culminating in a game winning PAT by Tracy Lounsbury, with just 12 seconds showing on the clock. The winning march began at the Deacon seven yard line with 3:01 remaining. Deacon fullback Larry Hopkins enjoyed another fine day, picking up 115 yards in 22 carries, and was instrumental in the winning drive as he scored with a three yard run set by his earlier 39 yard jaunt. eN (CK PALANCEG SHOWS 1-3-5 7-9 PM teady to Wear... ICC acti0 N.C. State's Mike Charron kicked field goals of 35 and 40 yards as State barely edged Maryland, at Norfolk, Virginia. As evidenced by the score, defense was the name of the game. Charron's first boot was set up by a pass interception return of 48 yards by State senior defensive end Steve Rummage. That proved enough as State upped their record to 2-4-1 while Maryland has won only once in six tries, beating USC last week. After stopping a William and Mary game opening drive 25 yards short of paydirt, Virginia stunned the Indians with a 75 yard TD toss from Bill Troup to end Joe Smith on its first offensive play. W & M moved with relative ease over the Cavalier defense piling up 331 yards, 217 on the ground, but found the shadows of the goal line altogether too frightening, con tinually fumbling the ball after long marches. With Leo Hart coming out of his two week passing hibernation and sophomore fullback Steve Jones keeping up his bruising running, Duke managed to beat Clemson 21 10 at Death Valley. The league leading Devils were shocked in the second period when Clemson defensive back Don Kelley stepped inside ace receiver Wes Chesson, who snagged 13 tosses in the game, picked off a Hart pass and sped 101 yards for a touchdown.
