At the Joe' almox by Jerr "Joe," like many of the "now" or relevant," films, misses the point; it does however come closer to making It than any film l've seen. Why "Joe" falls is not an easy question. It is a picture that really tries to present what is happening. "Joe" manages to avoid some of the pitfalls of current "Pepsi-generation" films. For one thing it is reasonably fair in its characterization of kids and their parents. There is no one-sided painting of older people as stupid fascists who cause hassles for no reason. Kids, or if you prefer, "hippies," are not shown as flower children, high on peace and love. The characters of "Joe" are real. Hippies are presented as people, people who do and sell drugs, people who steal, and people who are not always as concerned with turning you on as with turning you over. Parents or older people are shown as they are, Ignorant, not stupid. There is a vast difference. They are shown working jobs that dull their minds, they are shown facing the frustrations that turn open minded people Into screaming, unreasonable fascists. "Joe" does not condone the establishment, but it does try to illustrate why it is as it is. The characters of "Joe" are all very real. Each of them is a combination of all things, good and bad, tolerance and madness. "JOe' is believable, and that is why it fails. All things about "Joe" are real and fully ac ceptable, except for the main plot. The film is too concerned with working up to a cataclysmic, shocking, ending; something it really didn't need. In fact; the ending ruins "Joe.", The real story of "Joe" is not in the mass murder of hippies, or the totally improbable meeting of opposite ends of the plot, it is in the telling of the story. The simple, uncomplicated story of people doing their everyday things. People being made to work jobs they hate, to support homes they never wanted to live in, in a nation that exploits them so well they don't even realize they are being exploited. "Joe" should have been the story of real people in a real world, never all right, but never all wrong. The ending of "Joe" is amazing and com pelling, but it is cheap. It is there to cause shock and disbelief, not to enhance understanding and realism, the goals for which it was aiming. "Joe" missed the point, but it is the closest shot taken so far.
