The USC freshman will sport a
e new offensive look next Friday
e night when the Biddies travel to
Atlanta to take on the Georgia
Tech frosh.
The frosh will be seeking their
second win of the season. A 9-0 win
over Clemson is the only plus sign
alongside losses to N.C. State and
The Citadel.
Robbie Davis who has completed
20 of 44 passes, will start at the
quarterback position ahead of

Needless to say, Huff won the
starting nod. But the 19 year-ld
could not keep the same magic
against Memphis State last week.
XeSpite wire reports to the con
trary, Memphis State slugged out a
16-12 win.
Huf was respectable with 177
yards through the air but he failed
to getshis team into the end zone.
State has always been a passing
team. "They live and die on the
pass," said Cam Lewis, graduate
assistent who scouted the
Seminoles.
"We look for a real wide open
affair," Dietzel said. "'"hey have

passed for 295 yards and rushed for
28 more.
Woolbright, who started at
quarterback the first three games,
will be moved to flanker against
Tech. Against N.C. State
Woolbright was first tried at
flanker and the results wer two
receptions for 27 yards.
Coach Jackie Powers said,
"Woolbright is still practicing at
quarterback but we are working
him real hard at flanker."
Davis really made his presence
known against the Wolflets when
he came off the bench to complete
16 of 35 passes for 236 yards and
two touchdowns.
One of these passes was a 70 yard
strike to wide receiver Eddie
Muldrow. Muldrow who has caught
nine passes on the year for 188
yards is the leading receiver on the
team. Monty Matthews is close
behind with eight receptions for 95
yards.
Coach Powers said, "Overall we
have an opportunity to salvage a
good season, and a win over a
tough Tech team could give this
team a little momentum."

FSU has bee averaging most of
their yardage through ths air. Of
the 320 yards per game in total
offense 216 Come via passing. Only
113 on the ground.
Carlina Is averaging 218 yards
per game passing and 155 on the
ground. More important, the USC
secondary has held opponents to 80
yards a game passing. 16 times the
defensive team has picked off
passes. State has only five in
terceptious.
The Seminoles' pop gun running
attack is led by Tom Bailey with
178 yards to his credit. Bailey is
joined in the first team backfield
by fullback James Jarrett, who
has rushed for only 70 yards this
season. Jarrett is an effective
receiver with eight catches for 50
yards.
Gary Parris, who came in with
Huff and has been there since, will
start at tight end. Parris has six
catches, four against Florida.
State's leading receiver, Rhett
Dawson, lines up at a wide
receiver spot.
Dawson is a junior letterman
with 18 catches for 361 yards. He is
the main deep Seminole threat.
Arthur Monroe and Paul
Magalski will also see action in the
Tribe's backfield. Monroe has
rushed for 142 yards and grabbed
six passes. Magalski has 54 yards
rushing in only 11 carries.
He ripped Carolina last year
with a 33 yard touchdown run the
only second time he had ever
carried the ball as a Seminole. He
picked up over 100 yards in that
contest.
The two top defensive players for
State are tackle Robert
McEachern and linebacker Bill
Lohse. Dietzel called Lohse "top
notch on the run." McEachern is
considered one of the best tackles

Dietzel said.
The Gamecoks have shuffled
their lneup in preperation for the
clash. Standout tackle Jimmy
Poston, a preseason All-America
choice and Al-ACC last season,
was demoted to the second team.
Joe Regalis took over for Poston
but suffered sprained ligaments
above the knee during practice.
"He was a little gimpy," Dietzel
said, "but I think he'll be ready to
go. He'll start but he and Poston
will probably split up the time like
they have been doing."
Jeff Tope will start at tackle in
place of Dave DeCamilla, who
missed the Maryland game with an
injured ankle. DeCamilla is ex
pected to see only spotted action.
Bill Boyte "has been playing
better" than Rick Hipkins at tackle
and will get the chance to start
Saturday. Boyte, the AAAA
lineman of the YYEAR AT
Camden High School, has actually
put in more time than Hipkins, last
season's starter.
"We're not mad at anyone,"
Dietzel said, "but we feel that the
boy that is playing the best is the
one that should get the chance to
start.
"The team knows who is playing
the best and they know who
deserves to start. We can't ever get
to the point that a boy thinks he's
going to start because he is who he
is. We don't have that now and
don't ever want it.
""Neville Files has been playing
real fine football for us at defen
sive halfback," Dietzel continued.
"We feel he deserves to start. With
that we can put Jimmy Nash
behind Tyler (Hellams) at safety.
'Tyler is a heck of a ball player
but he knows only one speed, 110
per cent, and anyone that has ever
had mono knows how fast he can
get tired."

Young credits

for success
By DOUG WILLIAMS
Sports Writer
Jackie Young is taking his sudden success in stride. "I'm
just lucky, I guess," he said. "Sure, I'm surprised. It's just
that the line gives me really great protection."
Young also credits USC's receiving corps with his passing
game. "They're all real good. Hamrick, Freeman,
Haggard, Mitchell, Trevillian, Brown. They're just great.
"It was a pass to the left," Jackie said, referring to the
play that resulted in his injury, "and I was looking in that
direction. Then tvpqys, stt ,from the right, an'i I. went
down on the left "ulder-f11pss it was just;a,bad bone
bruise."
"It's still a bit sore, but all right," Young said, "I
practiced Wednesday for the first time. It's sore, but it
won't hinder my mobility."
The sophomore quarterback made no excuses for the
Maryland loss. "That game really hurt. We thought they
were just going to roll over and play dead." Then, after a
short pause, he added, "But I guess they didn't.
"They were tough," he continued. "They had given other
teams all the breaks. Like against North Carolina they gave
them the ball five times inside the twenty. I know that
they're always tough against us. But last week we just
didn't get those breaks."
Young did not rule the Gamecocks out of the ACC
conference race. "We still have a chance. Duke has to beat
North Carolina, Wake Forest has to beat Duke, and we have
to beat Duke.
"Sure, a lot of things have to happen just right. But we'll
be right there until it's all over."
Young also said that the .FSU defensive secondary was
tough. "But I'm expecting a real good game from the team.
We've had a fine week of practice, and should be all set to
go," he concluded.
