Quotable unquote:
Hiding men behind masks during
confrontations is like the main
tenance of strict political privilege
and privacy: both lead to awful
abuses.
One of the four graduate student
representatives to Student Senate
is Brian Rines. Rines is a
psychology major and has been a
member of the senate for four
years. Last year he was a member
of - the Student Disciplinary
Committee and this year is the
ranking memtier of the Rules
Committee. In speaking with him,
one gets the impression of an in
tense-though not overly so, as he
seems restrained about many
things-young man, committed to
finding elemental approaches to
specific, but yet to be defined
problems. He feels interviews are
not the ideal way to communicate
and prefers selective reticence to
open and unguarded statements
which become unfair game for
misquotation. This approach
certainly would give him my vote.
as papal nuncio; but as my
representative and interviewee...?
Last year, Brian was a strident
voice of support in the Senate's
decision to back the student strike.
His avowed purpose was to use the
strike as a means for gaining
concessions toward a policy of
more student involvement in
university affairs. Meanwhile, his
attitude toward the senate is that it
is a mostly infeffective body that
merely . gives lip service to the
ideals of student participation in
the decision-making process.
Rines has not yet produced any
legislation for his constituency, but
hopes to acquire a track record in
the future.
While Brian Rines is a four year
veteran of the legislative scene,
Tom Hiers is now in his initial
tenure. Hiers is also a member of
the psychology department and it

was the prodding of Rims that
persuaded him to run for a senate
vacancy last spring. He then
became a factor in Rines' cam
paign to push the senate toward
supporting the strike; "Brian felt
he could use another liberal voice "
such as mine In the senate to
realize his plan to gain sen'oe
support for the strike."
-Hiers spent a number of years- in
Biafra and Brazil with the Peace
Corps prior to coming to South
Carolina. He laments student
docility and predilection for
uninvolvement. As a candidate, he
had no platform, since, running
unopposed, "a platform was un
necessary."
A third member of this
quatrapoliticlan is Doug Jones. He
is a member of the physics
department. He is rather difficult
to track down. Perhaps next week?
Our mystery man of the week
removes, the others from con
sideration as a triumverate. I have
been assured that this fourth
senator exists, but unfortunately
he must remain unheralded and
unnamed by this writer, a situation
I hope will improve by next week,
since neither of the two senators
interviewed knew his name.
