have 25 or 30 more black
patrolmen on the force. "I don't
care what anybody says, we are
not discriminating."
One student asked if it was
necessary for the Highway Patrol
to fire on the crowd of students that
demonstrated at S. C. State College
in Orangeburg in 1968.
Thompson replied that the
patrolmen were being fired on

during the six months of active
duty that a trainee must undergo.
The present annual requirement Is
16i hours-basically a full weekend
of training in "our own program",
McCrady said.
At one point in the discussion,
Bob Bender produced a taped
recording concerning the tear
gassing of dormitories. 'The con
versation took place between a
guardsman in a dorm and a high
way patrol car. The guardsman
repeatedly requested that the
gassing of the dorms be stopped.
His requests were ignored. The
same tape will be played today for
Chief Campbell.
On questions rising from the
Kent State killings and the
Scranton Report, McCrady said
the criticism was "unfair." "They
the Guardsmen) were not there
by choice and it is not of their
doing. It was an unfortunate in
cident that came out when law
enforcement people couldn't
contain it."

Spears said the idea of a
university senate arose at the
"'think tank" session at Hilton
Head. Six student senators will
meet with members of the faculty
senate in an interim committee to
study the proposal. Student and
faculty senates would still exist but
the university senate would have
more power, he explained.
Spears said that both the student
and faculty senates have served a
primarily advisory function but a
university senate would force the
president of the school to either
sign or veto a bill.
