They carried on a week of farces and falsities trying to im press a bunch of innocent fresh men, transfers and various other students, only to reject 98 per cent of them within a short period of time. The rushees were gradually* reduced to a small number who could conform to their standards and live up to their creeds. They always seem to forget that behind those little shiny white plastic badges were people with life and personality and feelings. For a small number of so called"cuts" it will take at least two years of their college life to completely recover from the rejection which they have felt. For another small number of lucky rushees, they will find more useful organizations to which they will devote their time, efforts and money. To those who did manage to pledge, I hope you can keep up with the study halls, the activities and get away from the fraternity men fast enough, because you've managed to fit yourselves into the stereotyped-mald of the.xororitis, ANNE W. No T ipping BBOTT DRIVIE fled 'farce Once upon a time there was a land of USCanda and a board of trustandans who helped to rule it. Now it seems that in the month of May a group of USCandan's children violated the law of the land. *They claimed they were oppressed and that the laws were unjust and they were ill-treated. Now the trustandans had to prove to the USCandans that these children were at fault, that they (the children) were wrong and not the laws. So they set up a special committee of trustandans to judge the action -of the children rather than the established committee of USCandans who 4ad always made decisions like thii in the past. Well, needless to say, the committee of trustandans found the children wrong. That ended the problems in the land of USCanda, except for a few of the children who of course had the idea that something wasn't just right and fair when the special trustandans :ommittee judged them instead of the established committee. But us we all know, trustandans wouldn't sow the seeds' ot op pression or. destruction or would they? -MICHAEL R. Notes from Hilton Head: Within the almost continuous dialogue, a position repeatedly presIs itself in one form or anothet. Changing attitudes in the general understanding of the University's position In the community are apparent. Students suggest that legal at fairs should be seen as legal 'af fairs, not as administrative probibms--thus leaving the University largely out of the field .of law enforcement. The University must now be viewed as a part of and a par ticipant in the affairs of its surrounding community. Our University, as well ' as others throughout the nation, must no longer be looked upon and treated as a "special case". We can no longer lock our doors, close our eyes, and pretend that we are not SALES NEE Fl PART T1FI APPL BRITr DOWRa :.; (SKEPORMR WE'RI YoL them- in them.s Compf l-cueinsigr rnt helps you And we're no Ieo because accept g fstN On affected and toe large etent ruled by the poUlation around us. Understandng this idea, many of te people here seni to ask that wes1plystopgiving lip servie to the old platitudes and stop fearing the recognition of the problems of the Carolina.comimunity. Too long we have piled rules on top of rules which duplicate thme laws which the society, our society, has set up for everyone. What now is the role of the University? If it is here to prepare the student for a role in the real world, how can we continue to set ourselves apart? How can we pretend to be rulled by anything other than the laws of our own society? The overall attempt here is not to escape the law, but rather to stand up as equal'citizens, ready to accept any consequences which our law imposes. Even now many students would cry out: "Stop giving us special privileges. YQu are killing us with them."
