Baseballers
begin fall
workouts
Fall baseball practice will begin
for the USC baseball team Monday
afternoon at 3 O'clock at Captal
ty Park, according to second
year coach Bobby Richardson.
"Fall practice is basically a
tryout period for any interested
boys," said Richardson. "No one
will be allowed to play next spring
uniles he comes out now and we
have a chance to evaluate his
potential."
Richardson added that all boys
will be required to supply their own
practice equipment.
The baseball team finished 14-20
last year in Richardson's first
season but improved their ACC
record from 3-15-1 in 1969 to a 9-12
mark last spring.
The strong point of the
baseballers is the pitching while
hitting continues to be a problem.
Although all of the pitching staff
performed well only one, Eddie
Bolton, had a winning record.
Bolton finished 6-3 with a 2.34
marned run average.
Lefthanders George Beam and
Alan Hilliard found a home as
rreshmao with Beam finishing
with a sparkling 1.53 ERA and
Hilliard leading the team in in
rings pitched and strikeouts.
Hilliard had a 3.24 earned run
mark.
USC changes
lineup
for State
The USC football team has
altered its lineup for the upcoming
game with N. C. State this
Saturday in Raleigh.
The changes were made due to
performances against Wake
Forest last week when the
Gamecocks rolled to a 43-7 win.
Seniors Doug Hamrick and Can
dler Boyd were rewarded for their
efforts in the big win and
sophomore Mike Haggard was
moved up to replace Jimmy
Mitchell who suffered a bruised
shoulder in the Wake game at
flanker.
Mitchell is not expected to be
ready to play by this weekend. He
had his arm in a sling during the
first part of this week and is not
expected to ever make the trip.
Hamrick steps in for junior Billy
Freeman at tight end where he has
started for the last two seasons.
Boyd replaces sophomore Russ
Kuritz at Roverback. Kuritz was a
running back on the frosh team
last year but was switched to
defense when Tyler Hellams came
down with mononuclosis.
Soccer Club
apens under
disadvantage
A coaehless team. no matter how
good. is at a disadvantage.
The USC Soccer_Club is laboring
under just this disadvantage but
the prospect doesn't seem to
bother Allen Rutherford and the
some 20 Soccer fanatics who
showed up for the initial practice
session Monday afternoon.
".We haven't set up any games as
yet." Rutherford said. "We'll have
to see what we have in the line of a
team."
The players practice every
Monday. Wednesday, and Friday
at :3 p.m. on intramural field "A".
but the club often has conflicts with
the band.
The club has been set us as. a
separate entity along with the
Rtugby Club this year.
"The two clubs were starting to
require too much money." Dr.
Paul Fidler'. assistant vice
president for student affairs said.
"So we requested them to consider
becoming independent of the In
tramural Office. They have been
independent since last Decem
her."
While the USC Soccer Club finds
It difficult to get matches with
many schools because it falls to
meet conference requirements,
Rtutherford seemed to feel that the "
club will have no trouble findhug
opponents from among such choels
as Columbia Bible College. which
features a number of foriega
students.
