Just acoup of week ago, USC's second coed ROTC student applied. Annie L Coker learned about fth program by, reading a story in a sp4.isue of The Gamecock, the -USC student newspaper, which 4s distribute. to freshmen. Miss Coker, from Moncks Corner, Sgned up for the program before she even told her parents about it. Both the girls are enthusiatic. They both Oeboed the remark that their friends admire what they are doing - breaking a traditional men's domain, not just forthe sake ExciteMe There's a Oew kind of educational Otoltement at the I University of South Carolina. This spring a 3-station Audio Tutorial Lening Center was in stalled in Room o of the Life Sciences Building at Green and Sumter in Columbia, S.C. Dr. C David HusbAid, assistant k professor of biology, was the I planner and implementer of the i project. An Audio-Tutorial Learning Center differs from what most of us remenber about college c classrooms. A Learning Center is S full of activity, with student 9 projects in full swing and at all b differend stages of development. ti Simultaneously, some students may listen to units of study on ti audio tape in individual study carrels, other may prepare and il carry outjxperiments, some may h watch O,nd, duplicats new ig techniques of dissection or slide- si Sorority big s Some 190 sorority rushees will si receive bids tonight following two s4 weeks of skit parties and ice water teas. ti P USC's eight sororities rushed p about 335 women this year, ac- ri cording to Panhellenic Rush Chairman Rene Braconnier. se "We've had the most girls to go out w in five years," Panhellenic Council H Chairman Cathy Hines said-.t Miss Hines attributes the in creased number of rushees to h< "lowering of requirements for rush R and also people have thought til sororities were sort of a s Candle fire Sorority rush brought out more T than the usual crop of Freshman b' women Tuesday; it also brought th out the Columbia Fire department. Their active duty Obligation is the same as that of the nen, four years. Each woman cadet also will ttend a field training en rampment during the summer as a equired part of the AFROTC raining. Although the AFROTC unit at JSC is the first in the state to kccept women, four universities in he nation were allowed to accept hem last year under a test nt in lea naking, still others might see a ime-lapse film of a flower bud pening, or any one of a numerous ange of independent activies. The students don't disturb one nother-the room is considerably juieter than most college lassrooms. And many educators elieve that more learning takes lace in the Audio-Tutorial ,earning Center than in the con 'entional lecture-laboratory in-, truction. The Learning Center can ac omodate 520 students per emester. Dr. Husband and five raduate assistants conduct the iology 101-102 courses. Three of ie assistants are considered t extra" help to get the audio torial course going. .The Audio-Tutorial System of istruction lets the student lean at is own pace by combining audo Pes. slides. workbooks, texts, lecimens. and films, along with t rush SCS ereotype. Now they realize that >rorities are individualistic, too." Tuesday night rushees listed iree sororities in order of reference following "last night" arties. A new WAp uniform has just been authorhse by the Air F're, Col. Swanger says, and they are on order for USC'S coed ROTC members. The new outfits have a hemline about two inches above the knee, which is somewhat longer than the girls are accustomed to wearing, but they both say that's no big problem. Dress regulations do present a minor problem for Miss Metts. She has long, flowing hair, but rules say that hair must not fall below Lhe shoulder line. She will solve hat by putting her hair up or earing wigs. Miss Coker's hair will be no Problem. Hers Is shoulder length is it Is. Col. Swanger said adjustments for these two girls In ROTC should be smooth, since "they are both very mature and have solid ideas about their plans." ROTC programs in general on :ollege campuses have been the argets of criticism from some :rcles for several years now, but hat bothers neither of these two 'irls.
