Dear Miss Manning:
While Robert Golff (last Wed
nesday's guest columnist) may
fancy himself as a talented writer,
and although he has hitched his
wagon to a particular political
rhetoric that's currently popular,
he is in no way appealing or ef
fective; nor even sincere
sounding.
So many people now days get so
caught up in the sound of their own
wailing, they do disservice to the
cause they support. Egotism and a
self-conception of some type of
holy crusader exert a larger in
fluence on their journalistic en
deavors than do real issues, events
and philosophies. Just a fortnight
ago, Albert Wat?on was calling for
a melodramatic showdown bet
ween him (the white knight) and
the "McNair-West regime" (the
bad guys) on the issue, of all
things, of selling Japanese tee
shirts at Tricentennial centers.
Now here goes Mr. Golff, teeing off
(I couldn't resist) on some cliche
ridden .verbage that bores and
sickens us all. Is there no end?
Golff states that his arms are
tired from his devine toil; perhaps
so. Wailing and weeping can be
very tiring - not just to the weeper,
either. It is also very ineffective.
Mr. Golff's generous use of the
editorial "we", his ludicrous quote
(CS&N. indeed), and most of all,
his thoughtful inclusion of himself
among the ranks of saints and
martyrs. label him and those like
him as egotistic, idealistic, young

punks if I've ever seen any. The
older generation is quickly turned
off by him and rightly so. Sen.
McCarthy was made successful in
the '68 primaries not by the Golffs
in his campaign, but by the "clean
Gene" kids who spruced up and
went to work. They rang doorbells,
dialed numbers and handed out
leaflets. Their message was
logical, straight and coherent.
They were trying to communicate
their opinions, and therein they
were successful. We all, on either
sdie, could take lesson.
I don't like America's state any
more than you do, Mr. Golff; but
wailing for change and working for
it are two different things.

This letter written to ask that we,
