he Establishment: the people that make Carolina tick Jones Provost Wi. Pattersor: Dr. William H. Patterson has been Provost of the University of South Carolina since 1968. As Provost, he is responsible for the academic programs of the University and relieves the office of the President of such duties as may be assigned to him by the President. The Provost has. the assistance of a Vice Provost and an Associate Provost who is directly responsible for the super vision of the regional campuses. 13 Dr. Patterson, a native of Charleston, earned a doctor of philosophy degree in history at the University and has taught in the USC College of Engineering and the Department of History. He has held high positions in the ad ministrations of four USC presidents---Adm. Norman M. Smith, Donald Russell, Dr. Robert L. Sumwait and Dr. Thomas F. Jones, the current president---including assistant to the president, dean of ad. ministration, dean of the university and senior vice president. His publications include ''Through the Heart of the South," and articles in ''College and University Business,'' ''Proceedings of the S.C. Historical Assn.,'' and "Proceedings of the Daicho Historical Society." Dr. Patterson is a member of the American, Mississippi Valley, Southern and South Carolina historical associations; S. C. Jones became President of the University of South Carolina in 1962 after having served four years as Head of the School of Electrical Engineering at Purdue University. He holds the B. S. degree from Mississippi State and the Masters and Doctorate from the Massachusetts institute of Technology. In 1966 he received the Doctor of Laws degree from the Citadel. Dr. Jones was born in Henderson, Tennessee, July 9, 1916. He is married to the former Mary Butterworth of Somerset, Massachusetts, and they have five children. In 1947 he joined the MIT faculty where his research concerned com puters, nuclear instrumentation and missile systems, and his teaching gave new contributions to standards and practices in electrical engineering curricula throughout the nation. At Purdue he developed a new curriculum, originated a special un dergraduate program for honors !tudents interested in research, and greatly expanded graduate studies and research. WIS Radio and Television in Columbia named Dr. Jones 1966 South Carolinian of-the-Year, the fourth person to receive the distinction and following U.S. District Judge Donald Russell, late industrialist Charles E. Daniel and Gen. William West moreland. Dr. Jones is a member of the National Science Board which has statutory responsibility for setting policies for the development of the national potential in science, ap pointed-in 1966 by President Johnson, and of the Executive Committee of the National Highway Research Board. He is a member of the Council on Higher Education in the Americans, the International Association of University Presidents, the Advisory Board of the Southern Region of the institute of International Education, the Education and World Affairs Task Force on Agriculture and Engineering; is chairman of the Committee on Educational Telecommunications for the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, is president of the Southern Association of Land Grant Colleges and State Universities (1970). In 1969 he was elected to mem bership in the select National Academy of Engineering. In February 1970 he was named "1969 Salesman of the Year" by the Columbia Sales and Marketing Executives. Vice Pres. Tharles Witten A retired captain in the U.S. Navy and formerly head of the Department of Naval Science at the University of South Carolina, Charles H. Witten was named USC vice president for students affairs in 1966 after three years of service as dean of students at the University. Witten received B. A. and M.A. degrees from the Unversity of North Carolina and his master of education degree from USC. He also attended the U.S. Navy General Line School and the Naval War College. A former research chemist with the General Printing Ink Corp., Witten also is assistant professor of education at USC. Witten is a member of the S.C. Association of Student Fiancial Aid Ad ministration, National Association of Foreign Student Affairs, American College Personnel Association, American Per sonnel and Guidance Association, Southern College Personnel Association, Southern Association of Financial Aid Ad. ministrators, National Education Association , S.C. Education Association, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma.
