The Baseball team came from
behind to force Georgia into extra
innings yesterday but saw the
effort go for nothing as the
Bulldogs scored on a two-out single
in the eleventh to beat the
Gamecocks, 3-2, in the final game
fo the 1970 season.
Pitching duel
Larry Erbaugh kept the Georgia
bats silent-not giving up a hit
until the sixth-but the Bulldog's
David Reeves and Bob Cannon
rendered USC helpless until both
clubs broke the ice with a pair of
runs each in the ninth.
Erbaugh set down Tom Cannon
on strikes to begin the last
scheduled inning but third
baseman Kirby Campanella
smashed a line drive double off the
right field fence.
Erbaugh, a sophomore, gave up
a base on balls to. his mound op
ponent Cannon, who had relieved

"1 am encouraged with this
season in that we won nine games
in the ACC," Coach Bobby
Richardson said, summing up the
1970 baseball season.
"We ran the bases real good this
year," Richardson continued, "but
we didn't hit with men on base. We
just couldn't come up with the key
hit."
Richardson's charges had just
dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 extra
inning contest to the Georgia
Bulldogs. The loss was the fourth
in extra innings this season for the
Gamecocks.
"I was also encouraged with the
pitching this year. Our freshman
came through for us and teamed
with Eddie Bolton to give us pit
ching as good as any in the Con
ference.
"Bolton did a tremendous job of
staying in control of the ball games
he pitched. I was pleased with this
because I had heard that Bolton
had a problem getting the ball over
the plate. He was our biggest

USC played with the youngest
lineup in the conference with as
many as five freshmen and only
two seniors in the starting lineup.
The team will return all but cat
cher Joe Land and outfielder Don
Stanley to the next year's 'club
from the eight regulars and will
lose only Jimbo Smith from the
pitching corps.
Richardson turned his thoughts
to next season and the chances for
the ACC title.
"Basically the entire team will
be back but that doesn't mean we
won't make changes. Next
season's lineup will depend on who
I recruit. The team needs im
provement and if that means
cutting a boy on scholarship off the
team then that will be done,"
Richardson said.
Richardson then began talking
about the first baseball recruit that
he had signed yesterday afteP the
Georgia game.
"We signed John Gambrell from
Manning and we think he will fit
right into our program at USC. He
is a centerfielder who runs the 100
in 9.7 and running the bases can
break up any college game. He
could have went to any school in
the south on a track or baseball
scholarship.
"We were very much in con

split with the powers in. the Con

We split doubleheaders with N. C.
State, Clemson and Maryland and

"One more good hitter or a good
pitcher in the right place and we'll
be right in contention for the ACC
title next year."
Top players who will return next
year are headed by the ABC
combination of Butch Anderson,
Eddie Boiton and Buddy Caldwell.
Anderson and Caldwell finished
the season with over .320 batting
marks while Bolton was 6-3 with a
2.34 ERA.
Anderson hit .282 as a sophomore
with four home runs. He hit three
round trippers this season and
drove in 18 runs. Caldwell hit .280
last season and set a new USC
home run record this year with five
over the fence blows.
Alan Hilliard and George Beam
provided the bulk of the lefthanded
pitching attack as each finished
with respectable ERA's. Bo
Robinson, another freshman
lefthander, is also expected to lend
assistance to the Carolina -effort
next season.
Sophomores Larry Erbaugh and
Arnie Marzullp will return to give
depth to the pitching staff. Mar
zullo sat out most of the 1970 season
due to torn ligaments in the elbow
while Erbaugh saw action as a
relief pitcher. '
Erbaugh was the losing pitcher
against Georgia despite holding
the 'Dogs hitless for six innings.
