Specifically, Jones stated, "After prolonged and careful consideration of all aspects, and possibilities, the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina has voted unanimously to take no action at this time .to change or jeoparadize the status of the University of South Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference. "It is the wish of the Board that no more be said on this matter at this time," he added. Jones then left the room and the students who said they had come to seek an audience with the Board filed out peacefully. Jones statement ended weeks of speculation that USC would leave the conference immediately. The three USC-supported proposals at the ACC meeting at 'Southern Pines, N. C. were rejected by the other members of the ACC. Paramount among the proposals was a recommendation that the ACC drop its requirement that all athletes make a minimum of 800 on the SAT section of the College Board. The major deterrent to USC's leaving the conference was probably the section of the ACC bylaws which prohibits ACC members from playing in dependents in their area who have lower academic requirements than does the ACC. Had the University left the conference, they would have had to reschedule their six football games with other ACC members. Yesterday morning, the Trustee Athletic Committee and the Faculty Athletic Committee huddled to discuss the possibility of leaving the conference. The USC Baseball team suffered its first losing season last year since 1963 and seem destined for the same feat this season with a 12 17 record and only five games remaining an the 1970 schedule. Despite the past two years gloom the baseball picture at Carolina is very bright. Former Yankee great Bobby Richardson took over the reigns at the start of the current campaign and has led a team composed of young ballplayers to a respectable season, rescuing the Gamecocks from the ACC cellar. USC will lose only two of this season's regulars and only one member of the pitching staff. Catcher pitcher Joe Land and outfielder Don Stanley will graduate along with pitcher Jimbo Smith. Shortstop Butch Anderson and first sacker Buddy Caldwell will return for their senior campaigns next year and will return the major part of the USC hitting attack with them. Anderson hit .282 with four home runs as a sophomore and is currently hitting at a .350 clip with three homeruns and 18 RBI's. C'aldwell set a new USC home run mark with his fifth this year after being the co-holder with Anderson with four his sophomore season. He hit .280 last year and is rolling along with a .325 mark during this season. lFreshmen Tlomrhiy Moody. Alan Hilliard. George Beam, Bruce Pudlock, Howard Barfield, Jackie Brown. Bo Robinson and Steve Paris have seen plenty of action in their initial year and fit heavily in the Gamecock baseball future. Hilliard and Beam have been the top U!SC pitchers this season with respective 3.30 and 0.80 ERA's. Mloody is hitting .250 and fields secondt base like Richardson used to while Pudlock has a .246 mark and Barfield a .200~ slate after a slow start. Brown has been inilured most of - tiaude Freltan announcement s have ature the season and Robinson and Paris have seen duty as relief pitchers. Arnie Marzullo. a sophomore. sat out the 1970 season but will return next year. Marzullo was 0-3 with a 4.23 ERA as a freshman. Eddie Bolton, a hard throwing junior, will return to give the Gamecocks strong righthanded pitching to go with the leftie,. Beam and Hilliard. Bolton is 4-3 this year with a 3.80 ERA after a 3 5 mark as a sophomore. Gary Lance. Ronnie Fulmer, Donnie Churchwell and Tony Livornese have shots at good seasons in their senior years next season. Lance can play infield, outfield or pitch and is also a good hitter. Fulmer is a potential .300 hitter with a good arm from any of the three outfield spots. Churchwell is a good hitter who can play with improvement on his defense. Livornese has a rifle shot to second from his catching spot and has improved his hitting from .086 as a sophomore to a .270 mark in the part time action this season. Pitching help will come from Larry Erbaugh who has pitched in relief this season after starting in the last part of the season as a freshman. Erbaugh broke his hand at the beginning of his first college campiagn. Coach Richardson's presence at US( is also a bright spot in the b)aseball picture. With his drawing power the Gamecocks can sign some good baseball prospects and compete for the ACC title. The Gamecocks can still salvage a .500i season this year by winning their last live games. UTS( meets The Citadel today before a weekend that will see V'irginia on Fridlay and Miaryland for a pair on Sat urday. UtS( is out of the conterence running but can make trouble for the Terps who are staying close to the top behind Clemson and N. (C. State.
