Ralph Wahl, director of bands at
the University, has announced a
Tricentennial Tour May 8-10 that
will include six concerts in the
Charleston and Columbia areas.
The highlight of the tour will be a
special Presidential Concert
honoring President Thomas F.
Jones and the S.C Tricentennial
celebration -on Mother's Day,
Sunday, in Carolina Coliseum.
The public is invited to attend the
concert which will begin at 2:30
p.m.
Three different groups which
make upthe combined bands will
perform on the tour: the USC Jazz
Ensemble, a 20-piece show band or
stage band that specializes in
contemporary jazz; the Wind
Ensemble, a small select group
whose organization is based on the
development of individual in

phonic Band, a large concert
organization formed after the
marching season.
A program desigried to appeal to
all different tastes in music is
planned for the Sunday afternoon
concert.
The Jazz Ensemble will do such
numbers as "I Can't Stop Lovin'
You," "Sunny," "On Broadway,"
and "Let Me Love You."
The combined bands will do a
series of the well-known tunes
from the musical "Porgy and
Bess" by George Gershwin. They
also will present "special
arrangements of "The National
Anthem," "Carolina," and
"Carolina Fight Song."
A special treat during the con
cert will be the introduction of a
group called Sounds of Carolina, a
vocal group whose members are
drawn from USC's Oratorio and
Concert Choirs. Members of the
group perform outstanding
modern pop and rock music. The
group was organized by band
assistant George Naff.
In Sunday's concert, the group
will perform an arrangement
called "Sound of Now" which
includes such numbers as
"Carolina in the Morning," "Going
Out of My Head," "Spinning
Wheel." and "Aquarius."

the bands will perform at high
schools in Walterboro, Hanahan
and Bishop England and at the
Charles Towne Landing Exposition
Park in Charleston.

More than 80 pieces of art work
of all kinds will be sold today at the
annual Art Auction at the
University.
Auction director John O'Neil
said works which are currently on
display in Capstone House will be
sold to the highest bidders. The
auction will be in the Campus
Room and begins at 8 p.m.
Auctioneers this year will be
O'Neil of the Art Department,
Robert Heckel iof the Psychology
Department and Webster Myers of
the Law School.
Two-thirds of the proceeds from
each work goes to the artist while
one-third goes for art scholarships
at USC and for acquiring works for
USC's permanent collection.
Works of faculty members and art
students will be included.

James P. McFarland, chairman
