A group of concerned women
students met last night in Currell
College to discuss rule changes for
women.
The women selected a group of
seven women to meet with

bied for the 18 year old vote
yesterday.
Each delegate went to the State
House and urged his or her senator
to support the bill that is now
before the senate.
The meeting is being held in
Columbia and USC sent 36
delegates. Each school is allowed 1
delegate for each 250 students
enrolled.
According to Jim Corley, several
bills were discussed. The group
defeated a motion to allow com
mittee chairman to be elected
during the spring. These com

Since there were no more than 30
to 40 women at the meeting several
questioned whether they had
enough support to push forward
measures for the elimination of all
freshman women's rules.

appointed by the governor and will
continue to be so.
They also passed legislation that
a quorum is not necessary to vote
on every matter. The only time the
legislature will require one is
during votes on constitutional
revision which takes a 213 vote.
At the meeting represented by
most S. C. colleges, students plan
to discuss race relations in the
state. Allen University, S. C. State
and Voorhees colleges indicated
that they would attend but were not
present for the first days meetings.

little support for a large rally or a
massive walkout but that a large
number of women were concerned
with the restrictions placed upon
them.
Most women who had taken
petitions around their dorms that
read: "We are women of Carolina
concerned over the lack of control
that we have in regulating our own
lives. We believe that any women
who is Is able to graduate from
high school and gain entrance to
the University deserves to have
regulations equal to those of male
students. We feel that the fresh
men rules are insulting and
degrading to our intellects. We
know from experience that forcing
a woman to stay in her dorm is
destructive to her attitudes
towards study. We support the
immediate repeal of all freshmen

are not waiting for the students to
come to them, they are sending
representatives to the students.
"The day of the big meeting is
over," according to the Rev. Mr.
Robert Dasher, director of the
Lutheran Center on campus. "I do
most of my work out on the
campus," he said, and encourage
the participants in the Lutheran
program to do the same.
Many students do not have the
time to come to the centers with
the pressures of school. "I do not
think," he said, "that students
have fallen away from the idea of
the church, but rather, they have a
full schedule."

with -many of the rule, they were
not in favor of the statement that
they are "Insulting and
degrading," and that many girls
felt that first semester freshmen
were not ready to be in a com
munity without a curfew.
A second petition was discussed
that read "We, the undersigned
freshman woman, are in total
agreement with the rule change
passed by the Associated Women
Studqnts on April 16, ir0, which
states that all second semester
freshman women with parental
permission have no curfew.
However, if the parents of a first
semester freshman women feel
their daughter should not have a
curfew, they should have the right
to appeal to the Dean of Women,
and at the Dean's discretion, the
daughter should be allowed to have
no curfew.

The Rev. Mr. George S. Duffie
Jr., director of the Wesley
Foundation said that sending
students out onto the campus
represents a "change in the
theology of the church." He
stresses the point that the "action
is in the world, not the church."
Both ministers felt that it was
most important to let students
know what the organizations has to
offer and how it was different.

UFO's
defense
on today
The prosecution virtually con
cluded its case in the UFO trial
today with only one witness
remaining to speak. The defense is
expected to begin after the
testimony of an accountant is
given.
During the tiral Tuesday,
merchants and police officers took
to the stand and stated that the
UFO had caused problems with
crowds, noise, literature and
drugs.
Previously, several witnesses
had stated that they had bought
and sold drugs in the establish
ment.
Under cross examination, most
stated that they had been told to
leave the establishment because
they were dealing in drugs.
Three of the proprietors of the
UFO are on trial now. One is not
being tried until later because she
is pregnant and one is out of the
state.

Dr. Allen Cohen, dean of

Cohen, a graduate of Harvard
University, was formerly an
associate of Timothy Leary at
Millbrook. Currently, he is a
follower of the great Indian
master, Meher Baba.
