Furst holds the school one mile record, while Hill holds the record for two miles. In the distance events, Gamecock competition should come from Algie Sims in the mile and Jack Miller in the two mile. The mile could be a big event if Coach West decides to run Bob Kaczka in it again. Kaczka, ACC champion at 880 yards, ran the mile for the first time against Tech Saturday but wasn't really tested as he and Sims ran together for a tie. The Tiger's Furst has been outstanding in the mile thus far in the year. HINESOUT The Gamecocks are seriously hurting in the sprints, and will be without the services of Jimmy Small and Dave Hines. Small is still nursing a pulled hajtring muscle he injured against Duke, and Hines pulled a groin muscle in the meet at Tech. This leaves the sprinting duties in the hands of Bob Moran and Keith Eidson. Moran, a freshman, ~ is just now getting back into form I10.00I after sitting out most of this season with a leg muscle pull: Clemson has also had bad luck with their star sprinter Josh Collins (second in ACC 100 and 220 last year) also having an injured leg. Latt connected at the start of the final period of play to give Maxey a :35-34 lead, the first lead Maxey had enjoyed since a 14-13 margin also in the second quarter. Latt hit a foul shot moments later for a 36-34 Maxcy lead. Pat Laing hit to cut the lead to one but Kemp, Maxcy's most outstanding player of the night, scored to up the margin to three. USC scored to even the game in the second. Donnie Churchwell singled and advanced to third on a perfectly executed hit and run with Ronnie Fulmer getting a base hit over the first base bag to right field. Petosky hit a sharp ground ball to Bray at short and the Clemson star elected to get the double play, allowing Churchwell to score. Hilliard did not give up a hit after the first until the fourth when Jeff Siepe singled with Bray on first after an error. Bray went to second but USC turned a Anderson Moody-Caldwell double play to kill the threat. USC could not mount a threat against Gerhardt until Petosky's blow in the seventh. Gerhardt surrendered a leadoff triple to Hilliard to open the third but pit ched out of the jam by getting Tommy Moody on a fly to right, Gary Lance on strikes and An derson on a grounder to third. Another pair of lefties, USC's George Beam and Clemson's Dave Van Volkenburg, locked in another pitchers duel in the second game with the contest not being decided until both had departed. Van Volkenburg left with two out in the seventh and Beam pitched to three batters in the ninth without getting an out before leaving. Clemson once again drew first blood with a single tally in the sixth on a long homerun by Steve Kuester. USC came back to tie the game in the seventh and force extra innings. Buddy Caldwell singled to open the seventh and Gary Lance came on to run. Petosky then gave up his chance for a repeat performance by sacrificing the runner to second. The gamble paid off as Bruce Pudlock rapped his second hit of the game to score Lance. Neither team scored in the eight although Clemson had runners on first and second. Beam gave up back to back singles to Cal Weeks and Bray and was hurt by an error when he overthrew to first on an att mpted sacrifice that loaded the bases. Eddie Bolton came on to set Eddie Dixon down on strikes but walked Mike Ward for the winning run. Beam was charged with the loss as the base runners were his responsibility. The loss in the first game was the first for Clemson in the ACC. They are now 7-1 in the conference and 23-5 overall. Carolina is now 6-10 overall and 3-5 in ACC play.
