member of that committee yesterday said,
"ThW*'s the first I've heard of it." Dr. Raymond
Moore told us that he found the report "hard to
believe," but If it is true, "I for one will raise holy
hell."
One reason people like Dr. Moore would be
upset if they are ignored Is the need to know;
another is the resolution passed by the faculty
last month and which - if the report is true - is
being ignored by the Athletic Department and
administration. The resolution urged that "all
plans that have 6 direct or indirect bearing on
the total acadeMtic community of the University
of South Carolina be revealed to, and discussed
with the University Faculty Committee on
Athletics prior to any stage of implementation."
if they are being ignored and affronted, they
should be upset, and so should students - as
usual left out In the cold when major decisions
are made here.
Change the fee
Three cheers for Dr. Peter Becker's resolution
to recommend making the athletic students fee
non-mandatory. The resolution has a little
something for everybody. For that reason, it's

The resolution would not affect the $4.50 per
semester that students will pay starting next
year for the following 20 years to retire the bonds
on stage one of the stadium enlargement nor the
$2.50 a semester that students have been paying
for bond retirement on the Coliseum. Tough,. but
that would take too much cake from the Athletic
Department.
What the resolution would do - if the Board of
Trustees approves - is make the $12 students
pay each semester for tickets voluntary. The
Athletic Department could then sell the extra
tickets for $7 each for home football games.
Basketball tickets could also be sold. The
problem for them Is that most studenti who
would forgo the fee don't go to the games
anyway, and their tickets are already being
resold. And, what if the department had dif
ficulty selling the extra student tickets? That
would throw the whole rationale for stadium
expansion into somewhat of a quandary.
The proposal is one small step towards a fair
student contribution to the athletic program. It
should be approved.
Drug busts. .
Congratulations to the counselors that have
tried to make sure that any arrests or searches
made in their area be made legally with correci
search and or arrest warrants.
Congratulations to the student who asked city
police to pick up the pair of suspicious charac
ters standing watchfully outside one of the Men'l
Towers. Without actually saying so, the desk
officer told the student that they were narcotics
agents and therefore couldn't be arrested for
loitering.(Their hair was too short for loitering).
Congratulations to the counselor who,
suposedly, resisted - unsuccessfully - an ad
ministrative edict to remove an arrested
student's belongings from the dormitory. The
administrator insisted that the student was toc
much of a threat to the University to be assumed
anything less than guilty until proven Innocent
Watch your roommate. He may be one o1
Sheriff Frank Powell's men. (isn't that a nict
turn of affairs.) Above all, don't sell hir

Several members of FREAK claim that tho

Several scattered incidents have
been reported to The Gamecock
today. In the Education Library,
one Guardsman told a coed to go
home after she asked for a copy of
"Bunny Bumpy and his Feathery
Friends." The Guardsman was
shot on the spot by his com
manding officer.
And in McKissick Library,
dozens of Guardsmen were caught
reading Lady Chatterly's Lovers
without a charge-out slip.
As the strike dragged on with no
settlement in sight, Kenneth
Toombs, director of libraries, had
no comment. He couldn't even be
reached at home.
Meanwhile, President Jones was
last seen boarding a jet to New
York where he has reportedly
made reservations at the famous
Copacabana night club.
