Golfers win lose one to The USC Golf team lost its first match of the season Monday by dropping a 12-9 decision to Maryland after halting Virginia in a triangular golf meet, 15-6, for their eighth straight win. Maryland beat Virginia 14-7 to claim two wins for their days work. Maryland's Mike Nesbit earned medalist honors with a two-under par 71 while Wylie Ramsey was USC's medalist with a one-over 73. In the Virginia match Johnny Gregory lost his round 2%-%, Wade Mayo defeated his opponent, 3-0, Ronnie Smoak won 2%-%, Ramsey took a 3-0 win, Hap Lathrop came out on the long end of a 24-'% score, Max Poteet won, 3-0, and Earl Pruitt lost, %-2%. A pair of dual meets against strong Wake. Forest on April 13 and North Carolina April 14 or on the agenda before the South Carolina Intercollegiate Tournament April 17-18 in Hamp ton, S. C. The South Carolina Tournament will feature most of the schools from the state in a battle for state supremacy. Lifesaving offered A Senior Life Saving course will be offered at the University Pool April 13-14 at 3:30 p.m. which is open to all USC students for no charge. In the other singles matches, Bill Austin beat Pat Geron, 6-2 and 6-0; Art Kamm took John Young, s-6, 6 4 and 7-5; Todd Hansen defeated Dan Susong, 6-8, 6-0, and 7-5; and in the sixth position, Barry Altman whipped Phil Mfurray, 6-0 and 6-0. After winning the singles, the Gamecocks dropped their first doubles match of the day when Weisser and Austin were beaten by Barnes and Davis, 6-4 and 7-5. Carolina took the final two mat ches as McCarthy and Kamm stopped Geron and Young, 6-1 and 6-4, and Altman and Ray Cowan beat Susong and Murray, 6-1 and 6 3. The match brought Carolina's record to 3-7 under new Coach Bobby Heald. "We're looking better," said Heald, "but we always look better when we win." A team from the other side of Kentucky will be here tomorrow to take on the Gamecocks, when Western Kentucky meets Carolina at 2 at Maxcy-Gregg. Next week USC will begin to play its ACC schedule. "We're fortunate because we have all of our con ference matches scheduled at the end of the season," said Heald. This year the ACC Tennis Tournament will not be the only factor in determining the con ference champion. In each con ference, dual meet, one point will be awarded to a school for each match that it wins. The totals will be added prior to the tournament, and the points that each team gets during the tournament will also be included. The team with the most points after the tournament will be the ACC Champion. The tournament will be played May 7-9 at the University of North Carolina. Shaw had four first quarter points for ATO and Bouton of SAE also had four. SAE took a five point lead at the intermission by outscoring ATO, 12-7, in the second period of play. Turnbull was the halftime leader for SAE with nine points and Rodney Tapp led ATO at the break with six. SAE won the second half, 18-15, topping ATO, 9-7, in the third quarter and 9-8 in the final stanza of play for their eight point margin. PIKa WINS NINTH PiKa took complete command of the boards and humbled Kappa Alpha 80-37 for their ninth straight win. MAXCY EDGES LaBORDE Maxcy behind the scoring of Tom Kemp and Steve Zagoria and the ballhawking of Skipp Latt held off a late second half LaBorde rally to edge LaBorde, 46-40. LaBorde outscored Maxcy 39-34 in the final three stanzas but could not recover from a slow start that saw them go without a field goal the entire first quarter. C. State. Richardson's youth movement tried three freshman lefthanders on the mound in the series this past weekend. However, the Gamecock pitching staff - both rookies and veterans - continued to be plagued with an inability to get the ball in the strike zone. In 90 innings through last weekend, Gamecock pitchers issued 64 walks, threw five wild pitches and hit four batters. By contrast, opposing pitchers had yielded only 38 walks. Offensively, shortstop Anderson has been the Gamecocks' big gun. He leads the squad in hitting with a .351 average, in hits with 14, in home runs with three, in runs batted-in with nine, in runs scored with 11, and in stolen bases with five.
