Carl Wood of Richmond was named the meet's outstanding performer in the University Class for his 14.2 win in the 120-yard high hurdles and his record setting 51.9 time in the intermediate hurdles. John Bacon of Maryland upsel Roger Collins of Clemson and his own teammate Dave Reiss in the javelin with a fantastic heave of 260'71/", breaking Collins' olk record of 241'21)" by almost 2( feet. Collins also broke his owr record with a toss of 248'11%" ir finishing second. The same four runners teamed to take a fourth place in the mile relay, which was won by Georgia. The real hero of the meet was not in the college division, however. Haggard, a fresh man who also plays football, leaped a lifetime best of 45'71/4" in capturing second in that event. Rader, who doubles as an in termediate hurdler in dual meets, took fourth with a jump of 45'1/4". Billy Novo, Gamecock freshman hurdler, took third in the 120-yard high hurdles with a time of 14.5. Jim Scott, Carolina's best pole vaulter, took a tie for third in his specialty with a vault of 14'. Other Gamecock places were taken by the 440 relay teams and Netters 1 to Columl Columbia University surprised the tennis team Friday afternoon and drumped the Gamecocks, 5-4. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, but due to a mixup in the Athletic Depart ment, Columbia was at the Maxcy Gregg tennis courts Friday, ready to play while the Carolina players were coming down to practice. The match was not decided until the final doubles match when the USC team of Barry Altman and Todd Hansen fell to the Columbia team. 2-6, 8-6, and 4-6. Bill Austin, Art Kamm and Hansen all won their singles matches, while Altman was defeated in the number six match. Austin and Weisser took their doubles match, 6-2, 5-7 and 6-4. McCarthy and Kamm dropped the number two doubles match, 2-6, 8-6 and 4-6, to set up the final match. The loss moved Carolina's tennis team to a 2-8 for the season with the next match against Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday at the Maxcy-Gregg courts at 2.
