Barely rational conservatism
exposed itself again at the

William F. Buckley, Jr., editor of

reason. He was quite amusing, but
much more than he realized.

"diplomacy," thusly: "dexterity
or artfulness in securing ad
vantages without arousing
hostility; address or tact in con
duct of affairs. Keep this
paragraph in mind as you read on.
In your editorial of March 25,
1970, you were absolutely correct
in stating that I was visibly upset
by the fact that I was not invited to
attend the board of Trustees'
Athletic Committee meeting and
was not given an agenda...I was
truly upset by that fact. However,
you were grossly incorrect in
saying that I had spoken with
President Jones about the matter
and that I had been told not to
attempt to find an agenda. I had
never spoken with Dr. Jones about
it at all and I had never told you
that I had.
At the Board of Trustees meeting
that Wednesday afternoon I spoke
with one of the members of the
board whom I admire very much
and asked him to please explain

The only worthwhile correlation
the moderator made during the
' entire evening were the qualities
he ascribed to conservatives. The
jolly fop said in the same
paragraph that conservatives have
"a sense of perspective" and "a
sense of humor." After hearing
him speak, I see no difference
between the two.

Dear Mr. Wannamaker:
After reading The Gamecock's
plea for longer hours in certain
campus facilities, notably the
Russell House, the Gamecock
Room and the libraries, I feel you
have some' justification in com
i1 plaining. Lounging --facilities
should be made available to the
student at all hours, as well as
snack bar operations. I also agree
that Carolina needs to offer ex
panded study facilities which
would be made available to the
student whenever he needs to
study.
But your attack on campus
libraries showed ignorance and a
lack of research. Had you bothered
to talk to library officials about the
problem, perhaps your story might
have had a firmer basis and more
believability.
After talking with several of the
top officials (who, by the way, are
very willing to meet the inquiring
student on his own level and offer
their cooperation), I have found
that your suggestions are
somewhat ludicrous.
"For some strange reason," you
say, the libraries close on Saturday
nights, Sunday mornings and early
Sunday afternoon. According to
Kenneth Walter, assistant director
for technical developments, when
one considers lighting alone, the
cost of keeping the operations open
during these periods would be
prohibitive unless used by a very

I later discovered that the,
agenda .was not finalized until
immediately before the full board
meeting. Mr. Wannamaker, I trust
and value the opinion of this board
member and would not doubt the
information he gave me.
In your editorial on April 1, you
specifically wrote that I com
plained about the agenda incident
after I left the board meeting. Mr.
Wannamaker, if you will
remember correctly, I spoke with
you very briefly on thge stairs of
the Administration Building and at
that time you did not ask for my
personal feelings and I did not air
them to you.
My term of office is almost at an
end. The only roads for some
measure of accomplishment open
to me now are those which will see
that Student Government con
tinues to grow in strength and
importance. The student member
on the Board of Trustees can and
will be an extremely important
person not only to Student
Government but to the entire
student body as well. I attended
only one meeting of the Board of
Trustees and was in that meeting
for less than one hour. That is
hardly enough time to press for
confrontations of any kind. Rather,
I saw it my responsibility to at
tempt to establish a diplomatic
foundation for future student
members on the board built on
mutual trust and respect.
In the year to come I want the
Board of Trustees to have con
ridence in the judgments of the
student member and to feel at
complete ease in discussing
matters of importance. Also, I
ultimately would want to have a
voting student member on the
board with full board privileges.
ars backed
large number of students.
Perhaps your argument here
would be that cost should not be
such a major factor if providing a
decent place to study and a decent
education is their aim. I agree. But
in a. University which finds its
qtheletiv, dqpa;tmient monesi im
portant than its . academic
elements, and therefore more
deserving of funds, cost con
siderations are very real problems
to library administrators.
As far as your suggestion that
the libraries should Mlay open until
midnight: In the words of Kenneth
Tloombs, director of USC libraries,
"Tell him to come over here at a
quarter to 12 some night and find
out for himself." If you do, I think
you'll find out that McKissick is
open until then, at least on week
days.
As you say, the University
library facilities are inadequate.
This problem has already been
raced by its operators, and at least
admitted to by University ad
ministrators. But despite their
inferiorities, library officials are
well aware of their reason for
existence, of their responsibility to
serve the student.
Perhaps the "student
newspaper" could learn from
them, if it stopped to look, instead
or blindly criticize.
