measures have been taken to
prevent further intrusions."
Another problem is that
Columbia Hall was once a men's
residence hall. Mrs. Dodd said,
"There are some boys around who
know all about Colunbia Hall's
secret entrances."
Security guards are on duty from
6-8 a.m. at Columbia Hall.
Maintenance officials are on duty
throughout the night. Mrs. Dodd
said they had a different guard
every night and training of these
men was a problem.

SURPAS

Plans are underway for the
second Summer University
Residential Program for
Academically Superior Students
(or SURPASS) program at USC.
Last year SURPASS was a
resounding success, USC officials
say.
In place of conventional teaching
methods, SURPASS offers high
school students a different ap
proach to academic materials,
game simulation, cultural events
and other unstructured ex
periences.
A parent of one student who
participated last year said the
SURPASS approach to education
proved to be a stimulating and
maturing experience for the
student, much more stimulating

escape doors were open and ac
cessible to anyone on the street.
These doors and other outside
entrances had to be loAked."
Miss Willis said reports of
harrassment by soldiers was
exaggerated. "In many cases the
girls egged the soldiers on," she
said.
Miss Barbara Ray, freshman at
USC, said, "I like living at
Columbia Hall a lot. The walk to
classes isn't bad. I need the
exercise. I also think the security
here is very good."

tempt to understand the widened
vistas of science and engineering
in this technological age and its
explosive impace of society as it
touches individuals," says David
Meabon, who will direct this
summer's program.
Meabon said a sense of
belonging, participating and
making decisions within a peer
group will set the pace for the
entire program.
Rising juniors and seniors in
high school are eligible to par
ticipate in SURPASS this July 26

the S. C. House of Representatives.
A Democrat, Lourie has had a
liberpl voting record since he was
electqd,in. 1965. He is now setving
as vice chairman of the House
Education Committee.
When asked about the de
segregation order recently passed
by the Supreme Court, Lourie
said that "South Carolina would
obey the law." He added that the
Lamar incident "sobered t h e
people of the state."
He believes that the people of the
state will "exhaust every legal
means "to lessen the effect of the
order." He also said he was
unhappy about the timing of the
order.
In studying the public education
system in South Carolina, Lourie
maintains that the "local school

At the present time, Lourie is
very satisfied with the chair
manship of the Richland
Delegation and he does have
aspirations to higher positions in
the state, but maintains that his
present duties and allegiance is to
the people of this county.
