Clemson was called for two five
second violations late in the first
half, but the smaller Tigers con
trolled both of them to hold
Carolina even at intermission.
Clemson fought the taller
Gamecocks to a standstill in the
first half.
Carolina controlled the opening
tap, but Roche's driving layup was
blocked, and Clemson came down
court prepared to camp out if It
was necessary, to get the good
shot.
For the first eight minutes of the
game, Carolina could manage only
a Roche hwe throw and an Owens'
'tap, but the Tigers didn't do any
better, missing two layups and
drawing one charging and one
traveling violation.
The score was tied four times
during the opening 20 minutes, but
neither the Gamecocks nor the
Tigers could overcome poor
shooting performances and tur
nover problems. The Tigers
missed several driving layups
after the lane had been cleared by
their spread, and the Gamecocks
shol a miserable 27.8 per cent.
Roche managed only one point
during the period and missed all
four shots he attempted from the
floor.
Owens was the Gamecock's
leading scorer with nine points.
Roche had seven as did Ribock and
Carver. Riker and Rick Adylett
each had two points.
Ronnie Yates led the Tigers
with 12 pomnts. ani on driving layups
into the open area around the lass.
Many of the drives were aginst
Ribock. "Yates is quick," Ribok
said, "I saw him play up hr
against LSU and he stole the bell
from Pete Maravich twice."
Yates fouled out of the game
with Carolina ahead, 26-37.
Mahaffey was Clemson's second
