The rugby team will kick off its
season against Davidson Saturday
and will play Clemson Sunday on
intramural field B. Both games
start at 2.
"We will be seeking revenge for
the basketball, team against
Davidson," starter Jack Clasen
said. "We had a 3-5 record last
season and we will definitely
improve it this season."
The Gamecocks beat both
Clemson and Davidson during fall
season, 6-0 anid 8-0, respectively.
The rugby team consists of 15
players -- eight "scrum"
(lincmen) and seven backfield.
The ruggers do not use padding.
Points can be racked up in three
different manners. Three points
are allotted for running over the
goal, two points for an extra point
kick, and three points for a field
goal (penalty kick).

explaining the type of athlete
required to be a swimmer. "In
training the swimmer has to work

"The sprint swimmer must know
his time so precise that he can
come within two-tenths of it,"
Combes explained. "If he is too
fast or too slow it would mean
possible defeat."
Defeat is seeing the swimmer in
the next lane outstretch you by a
fingertip. Consolation? There is
none. Consolation is a meaningless
word lost in the rhetoric of fans and
sportswriters.
"The swimmer can withstand
pain only to a certain point,"
Combes continued. "At that point
the swimmer will rebel since he is
human."
Human he is.
