Johnson, who received his commission at January commencement excercises, has been assigned to the staff of Admiral Hyman Rickover, "the father of the nuclear submarine." Johnson went through strenuous testing procedures and was accepted into the Division of Navy Reactors, of the Atomic Energy Commission. Johnson, a native of Fall Branch, Tenn., was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Tau Beta PI and was executive officer of the NROTC unit his senior year. He made freshman and sophomore honor rolls as well as Dean's List. A recipient of Outstanding Electrical Engineering Student Award, he was listed in Who's Who and participated in Intramural Athletics. Each club is divided into men's and women's competition. The winner is decided by overall total points after eight periods of play. Basically a point is scored when a. team member, called a jammer, skates past an opponent. The game is played on an oval track 50 ft. by 90 ft. which can be put together in a matter of hours. The skating is always counter clockwise except in the event of a brawl between opposing members. This aspect of the game is very similar to Ice Hockey where penalties are issued for illegal tactics and fighting. The Bay Bombers are led by Player Coach Charlie "Mr. Roller Derby" O'Connell, a 17 year veteran. Christopherson relates that the team is involved with more than actual debating. The Carolina debate team will sponsor a high school forensics clinic the first weekend in March. High school teams from 40 high schools in the eastern United States will par ticipate. The Carolina team is also helping interested persons at Allen University to start a team there. "Needless to say, if anyone wants to join, we'll be happy to have them," Christopherson commented. Joan Weston captains the team's ladies division. Nicknamed the "Golden Girl" Weston has been elected to three all-star teams. Achoring the Northeast Braves' squad will be Player Coach Ronnie Robinson, son of Boxing great Sugar Ray Robinson. He was voted league's most valuable player two seasons ago. Allen Littles, the Braves' leading scorer, is also expected to see considerable ac tion. Margie Laszlo and Cathie Read head the Braves' women's squad, the league's best in defense while maintaining the highest point total average per game. Summer Ten USC students with records of participation in campus activities are needed as counselors to assist in this summer's freshmen orientation program. The dates of the program will coincide with the dates of the second session of summer school. Prospective counselors should be rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors. At least a 2.50 cum mulative GPR is prefered, but others will be considered. Salary plus room and partial board will be provided. Interested students should ob tain applications from the Coun seling Bureau. ULRA DANCE, OFFICERS The Universal Life Religious Association elected the following students to office -ast Thursday: McDonald to speak to YD's Heyward McDonald, candidate for the Democratic nomination to Congress from South Carolina's second district, will speak to USC's Young Democrats tomorrow night at 8 p.m. in Room 205 of the Russell House. McDonald is expected to discuss a resolution endorsing the recent statement of the National Democratic Policy Council calling for immediate withdrawal from Vietnam. Other main topics will be pollution, crime, racism and poverty. According to a release from the Young Democrats McDonald has been identified as "the leading young reformer working for ethics in government, racial justice. He is also considered a strong supporter of education, and a greater voice for the youth in public affairs." Presently McDonald is running unopposed for the Democratic nomination. Admission is $1.00 MRHPAC MEETING The Men Residence Halls Presidents Advisory Council (MRHPAC) will meet today at 3 p.m. in the Dean of Men's office located in the Pendleton Building. COLUMBIA HALL Senator Jim Leppard drafted a letter to Columbia Mayor Lester Bates calling for police protection and security for the residents of Columbia Hall. The letter cites repeated harassment of coeds on their way to campus by soldiers waiting at the city bus stop near Trinity Episcopal Church across the street from Columbia Hall. Leppard noted several incidents of soldiers causing trouble in and around the dormitory. The letter is currently in circulation among residents of the former hotel, and Leppard plans to send copies to local newspapers. ROOM CHANGES Residents of men's dormitories may change room within their dorms Monday, Feb. 23, according to the Housing Office. Cutbacks may hurt post-grads "Graduate programs at South Carolina may suffer serious set backs s a result of federal budget cutbacks," according to USC Graduate Program Director H. Willard Davis. Dean Davis said that as a result of the Nixon Administration's budget cuts the amount of federal aid to graduate programs will become smaller in scope. Two years ago graduate studies total of intraining was on the in crease, but now with the federal cuts training is on the decline, Davis said. Davis feels USC's graduate programs are "holding their own" in competition with other schools. He said that students are urged to move to other schools when they enter the field of graduate work. He said that the Carolina graduate programs are becoming more and more attractive to outside students because of the diversity offered at USC. Davis pointed this diversity out by saying that some of the sub departments are conducting programs that will benefit the people of South Carolina. An example of this is the work of The Traffic and Transportation Center in connection with the S.C., Senate Highway Department.
