John Bridgers, offensive back
field coach of the Pittsburgh
Steelers and former head football
coach at Baylor University, was
named to USC's football coaching
staff Jan. 23.
Bridgers will be in charge of
Carolina's passing game and will
serve as aide to Weems Baskin,
administrative assistant to Paul
Dietzel, USC athletic director.
He replaces Don "Scooter"
Purvis, who returned to his old
alma mater, Louisiana State
University, in the capacity of
assistant football coach and
recruiter in the state of

Bridgers, a native of Bir
mingham, Ala., attended Auburn
University where he was a guard

Three sophomores on a second-ranked team is not
unusual.
But when one starts and is considered the top first-year
varsity man in the nation and the other two come off the
bench to record big baskets, key assists and play as many
game minutes as some of the starters, it is another matter
altogether.
Such is the case with Gamecocks Tom Riker, Bob
Carver and Rick Aydlett.
Riker is tremendous. After a slow start he has come on
like gangbusters, tipping in stray shots, pulling down
rebounds, blocking shots, intimidating the opposition and,
when the time is right, bombing the nets from 15 to 30 feet
away.
Carver can come off the bench cold and start pumping in
those high arching shots from the top of the key. He plays
good defense and is a fine ball handler.
Aydlett may be the biggest surprise of all. During his
frosh season he was noted for his rebounding strength
more than his scoring ability.
But after long hours of practice he has become an ex
tremely acturate shooter, hitting 53 per cent of his shots
and is now the fourth-best player in the conference when it
comes to field goal accuracy.
Carver was the number two scorer on the frosh team and
handled the playmaking chores. A high school player in
the famed New York area, Carver was accustomed to the
freelance style employed by head coach Frank McGu1re.
Aydlett was used to pattern ball played at his high school
in Blacksburg, Va.
John Roche, Gamecock All-America, refers to Aydlett's
inexperience in the Gamecock style of play as an early
hinderance. "Rick learned by playing with the good -
competition. Every time Tom Owens blocked his shot, he
learned to take better shots," Roche said.
Both Carver and Roche call Aydlett the most improved
player on the team.
Unlike Lew Alcindor, who scored 56 poinfs in his first
varsity game, Riker started slow. "Tom was feeling his
way at first, trying to get adjusted," Carver explained.
Riker never played better than after his effort against
Notre Dame when he carried the Gamecocks during the
first half and forced the Fighting Irish to a second-half
defensive adjustment, which left other players open.
Carver, Riker's roommate, expressed everyone's
feelings about the 6-10 star. "Tom Riker is definitely the
top sophomore in the nation."
Roche said that "that three sophomores give the team a
sense of confidence. They enable the entire team the
chance to rest and take away the feeling that a few in
divid6als must carry the team."
The three have amazing talent and before they leave as
seniors they should earn honors for the school and
themselves.
"We no longer consider the three as sophomores," said
Roche. ''They are veterans now and will definitely be
heard from by their senior years."
