The schedule announced by director of athletics Paul Dietrol includes matches against each of the seven other Atlantic Coast Conference schools. In addition, the Gamecocks meet opponents from the Carolinas Conference, Mid-American Conference, Big Ten, Ivy League, Ohio Valley, Southern Conference and the SEC. The tournaments that the Gamecocks will compete in are the Tennessee Invitational in Knox ville, Tenn., on March 1-3 and the annual Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Chapel Hill, N. C. on March 7-9. Heald, who won the ACC singles title and shared on ACC doubles crown during his varsity career at South Carolina, has had his team working out in preparation for the season's opener, scheduled for March 14 against Furman at home. Roche sets new mark Carolina's fourth-ranked Gamecocks set two Littlejohn Coliseum records last Monday night at Clemson. John Roche, junior All-America backcourt ace from New York, scored 20 points in the first half, which broke the record set the week before by Georgia Tech's Rick Yunkus. Yunkus, who is tenth in the nation in scoring, scored 19 first half points in the Yellow Jackets' win over Clemson. The other record was the 11,049 fans that turned out to see the Gamecocks. This is the unglorious side of the celebrated life of athletics. Fur thermore, and unfortunately, the only time this subject is heard of is when there is a scandal involving illegal techniques used by the recruiter. On Jan. 28, this reporter wit nessed the unpublicized and better side of recruiting. The swimming team's soft spoken and agreeable head coach, Pete Combes, and assistant coach, friendly and outgoing John Pit tington, brought four prospects to Carolina country. The four prospects, John Poole, Rodger Rice, Rick Brewer, and Bob Warner are each all-state champions in their respective events. Poole, Rice, and Brewer are from Greenville. Warner is from Aiken. The coaches first stressed the most important - and rightfully so - aspect of Carolina - education. When the conversation turned to the law school-stadium con troversy, Bob Warner's father expressed exactly how the coaches and prespects feel about athletics versus scholarship. He opinioned that "the law school should be built because education is the most important part of college. . . ," but he hastily added that "the stadium should also be built because sports has ielped Carolina immensely." Changing from educational !ineament to athletics, the young men voiced, admiration over the vastness and expansiveness of the Carolina athletic complex. It was not the boyish, glassy-eyed ad miration portrayed on the silver screen and in the fantasies of Huck Finn adventures. It was an awe of the depth and potentiality of the Gamecocks' future. After lunch, the young men met Carolina's Athletic Director and head football coach, Paul Dietzel, and Lieutenant Governor John West. The highlight -of the whole Eventful day was the presentation f these young men to the coliseum !rowd during the halftime of the JSC-VPI basketball game. They vere enthused by the warm velcome they received from the iroud Carolina fans. After the game, the prospective wimmers said goodbye to arolina - and its host city, olumbia. Dietzel: Dr. Jones, I have here a list of swimming coaches that I would like to have and I want your opinion. Dr. Jones: Johnny Weismuller - no, he's getting too old - George Haines of the Santa Clara Swim Club - he's good - Don Schollander - he's good, too - I guess you can have your choice from the last two. Weismuller is getting on in years, though, and I don't think he would be of much help. Dietzel: Yes, Dr. Jones, ; guess you're correct. I talked to Haines, but he wants too much. If I can get him to come down, maybe I'll consider him. Schollander may quit his job with ABC, but it'll take some under-the table maneuvering. Dr. Jones: Well, look into it. You know that Carolina deserves the very best. We have you, Frank McGuire and Bobby Richardson - in cidentally - how many national cham pionships has Bobby won for us since we signed him in 1970? Dietzel: Five, sir. One NCAA title for every year he's been here. And Coach McGuire has won four - four NCAA titles since his first one in 1970. Dr. Jones: Fine. Fine. We must have excellence in our athletic coaching department. Check into Haines and Schollander and see who you would rather have. I'll see you next week. One year later... Dr. Jones: Yes, Paul, what can I do for you? Dietzel: I have here a list of tiddly-winks coaches that I would like to have here on our coaching staff. What do you think? Dr. Jones: Paul, first there's something I have to tell you. I've decided that our coaching staff isn't good enough. I'm going to have to let everyone go. USC still isn't satisfied. We didn't win a national title in cattle-roping last season and I'm afraid that won't do. Dietzf; You mean - (gulp) - I'm all through? DgNbatees: .Yes, Paul, I'm afraic(tN, Frank McGuire, Bobbyili:hardson, Dbn Schollander . . of them are through at Carolina. Dietzel: Who are you getting to replace us? Dr. Jones: Well, first of all, I'm getting Pete Rozelle to be athletic director. Good fellow, Pete is. And for football coach I've gotten Weeb Ewbank to come over to the USC side. I talked to Leo Durocher yesterday and he will coach the baseball team. Our new basketball coach is between two people - haven't made up my mind - Red Auerbach or Bob Causy. Cousy said last week that he'd be glad to give up his job with the Royals - more money at USC, you see - and Red indicated that he'd be honored to be on our staff. Dietzel: Well, I guess you won't be needing me anymore. (Sniff I). Dr. Jones: I'm sorry, Paul, but you know how it is. Athletics has put Carolina on the map and I intend to keep them there.
