2024 DEVINE STREET held an organizational meeting
FiVE POINTS last night to determine its numbers

According to Trish Owen, an
organizer of the group, the
organizational meeting was to
include cheerleaders, members of
the pep band, Dave Phillips,
manager of Russell House and
Vickie Fslinger, president of the
MI University Union.
"We want to prove that we have
S *people interested in promoting
F O school spirit." stated Miss Owen.
"We feel that we should do
soniething about the lack of
spirit."

Paul Dietzel, USC athletic
dyector and head football coach,
will hold a special press con
ference today at 7:30 p.m. at the.
Market Restaurant in Columbia at
which time "a news rplease of
considerable significance" will be
given.
Speculation circulating Thur
sday evening as to the subject
matter of the release was varied.
Some believe that Dietzel is going
to announce that he is leaving USC.
Others think that it was in regard
to an eleventh opponent for the
football Gamecocks next season.
The NCAA announced Wednesday
that member schools could

Spring rugby practice will begin
Feb. 11 at 5 p.m. on intramural
field "B" it was decided at a
Rugby Club meeting Thursday
evening.
Club officers elected at the
meeting were Jack Claussen,
president: Jack Browning, vice
president; George Geiser,
treasurer and Jim Wynn was
elected captain of the rugby team.
The Rugby Club urges anyone
interested in rugby to join their
club. Students do not have to
participate on the rugby team to be
a member of the club and they will
be eligible to attend all club social
functions.
Students interested in playing
rugby this spring areaalso urged to
come out to the first practice Feb.

The USC tugby team was invited
to attend a tournament in
Freeport. Grand Bahamas this
year. but had to turn the offer down
because of the lack of funds and
time for training.
In the planning stages is a third
rugby team to enable all members
of the team to participate. At
present, there are two teams, "A"
and "B". the former being the first
string.

The members of Carolina's most
secretive team (secretive because
nobodv knows when or where the
meets are) are of various1
backgrounds.
Mike Fox and George Fairey,
hoth iuniors. are members of this
forsaiken team. Fairey, a native
Columbian. is the team's primary
200-vard freestyler. He is in Pre
Med with a 3.0 average.

He also said the press conference
will not be about the eleventh
game, but said that he. was
working on a possible opponent. He
said that the opponent would be
someone big-someone that would
please everyone at Carolina. Notre
Dame was the team speculators

Dietzel said he could not divulge
the subject of the press conference
because "I can't break the con
fidence of the people involved."
Dietzel did say that in his
estimation the announcement
would be something significant
and reliable sources have in- d
dicated that it will make the (

The apex of all this is the meet.
The day of the meet is a day of
tension and nervousness. h
"When I'm on the blocks I'm k
plain scared," Fairey said, ex
pressing his feelings during the t
day of the meet.
"My tonguie gets fuzzy and my 5
hands clinch," Mike stated, also e
explaining his feelings. v
One thing that irks Fox and t
Fairev is the poor attendance the
team receives.
"The only attendance we get is 5
parents, close friends, and girl
friends." stated Fox. "The maina
reason is the poor publicity by the
athletic department and The0
Gamecock. Student interest is
lacking. too." U
