Harvey L. Burnette, M.D., director of the student health center, issued a statement to Student Senate in response to a bill passed by the General Welfare Committee. The bill requests that the in firmary prescribe "the pill" to students requesting them. Burnette said that the the in firmary "will not stock nor will it dispense contraceptive drugs." He listed several reasons for this decision. The long term effects of the drug have not been deter mined. Also he said that many warnings were issued with the pill. For example: "WARNINGS: Discontinue medication if there is sudden, partial or complete loss of vision, or if there is a sudden onset of proptosis (lid drop), diplopia (double vision) or migraine headaches." He added that certain conditions prevented patients from taking the medication--blood clots, nausea, abdominal pain, skin changes and psychic depressions have been connected with the drugs. Burnette said that the health center was there to treat and prevent illnesses and that the distribution of birth control pills does not come under this category. "On the contrary, it is quite possible that contraceptive drugs by contributing to promiscuous sexual activity could propagate the incidence of veneral disease."
