Dear Mr. Stepp:
As a South Carolinian and a
student at Davidson College I was
looking foward to attending our
game with your team on Feb. ii.
I was dismayed to find that your
athletic office had not sent the
Davidson ticket office even a
single ticket. Even after a con
certed attempt to procure, tickets
the Davidson office received only
refusals.
This stands in marked contrast
to last year's- South Carolina
Davidson game; played in the
Charlotte Coliseum, thousands of
South Carolina- fans attended with
tickets sent to thi South Carolina
ticket office for'sale.

The President announced that
the newly passed- population

cut down to about four hundred
million within the next decade.
Fourteen years from now doesn't
seem too far away.,But unless
something is done by the present
generation to control the
population, this will be the
situation which will probably face
most of us. as well as our future
generations.

The word is out that Columbia
seeks to beme "The Basketball
Capital" of country. Is this sort
of' one-sldedqess the way that
eminence is to be achieved? By
excluding supporters of all teams
that play yours?
Questioning my friends from
Carolina I find that they can't get
into the games either, but thanks to
friend Joe Usry a more equitable
system for student ticket sales has
been devised.
So if visiting team supporters
can't get into the games, and
Carolina students can't get into the
games, who can? Unfortunately, it
appears that money and privilege
decide who gets into the gas
NDney from those -who hav
wallets far fatter than any
student's and privileges granted to
peoplb like state legislators, who,
to my way of thinking, have no
more legitimate right to see the
games than any Carolina student.
In fact, it seems that somehow
students ought to be able to see
games in which THEIR team
plays--that's actually how it
started, you know, teams and
games were for students, not for
wealthy businessmen and state
legislators.
I heard on the news before
Christmas that student govern
ment senate at Carolina had
passed a resolution asking the
University to give priority to
construction of a new law school,
library and other academic needs
before launching into construction
of a new or expanded football
stadium. Good luck. Money and
privilege may well be against the
students here too.
For many years the University
of South Carolina has been unable
to achieve the excellence its

academic-minded friends have
hoped it would. Now, it appears
that the students themselves are
going to try to do what these
friends both inside and outside the
University have been unable to do
put first things first and leave the
accessories for a later date.
This time let's hope the much
maligned "student power" wins
over money and privilege.
And, by the way, we'll be wat
ching the game on TV. You may
want to come up to Charlotte to
watch it if they don't broadcast it
in Columbia.

(Ed's note: Each visitino team

Is allowed 25 seats. usually for
players, coaches and relatives.
Since Davidson's freshmen and
varsity teams will be playing here,
the school received .50 tickets from
USC. According to Ralph Floyd,
business manager for athletics,
that is standard procedure for
ACCe schools. Since USC and
Davidson played in Charlotte last
year. added Ticket Manager Ray
Faircioth. "They had tickets they
were trying to sell and we helped
them. Rut we're not in that shape
here.")

By MIKE KROCHMALNY
Associate Editor
While, it has not been the habit of The Gamecock to give
awards at the end of each year, we feel that this year has
been filled with such brilliance that those who helped make
it a success should be recognized for their contributions.
Herewith begins (and most likely ends) the Gamecock
Awards for Excellence.
To President Richard M. Nixon - the "I Don't Know
How He Did It" Award for putting up with What's-his
name all the way through the campaign and through a
year in office.
To Thomas F. Jones - the "Censor of the Year" Award
for his quick action in aot allowing the readers of The
Gamecock to be offended by their own words. '
To the girls of Carolina - the first "Where the Boys,
Are" Award for their "lock" raid on the boys dorm. Good '
luck and, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
To Student Government - the "We've Moved to the High
Rent District" Award for finally getting offices com
mensurate with their duties. When they get the power
commensurate with their offices, they will receive the
"Outstanding initiative Award."
To the Athletic Department - the "Timely Event of the
Year" Award for setting ticket distribution for Wednesday
and announcing it Tuesday night.
To Pete Pantsari - the "If You Want to Get Something
Done Right, Do it Yourself" Award for his football
cheerleading exploits.
To the football tearn - the "Stuck in the Mud'' Award\
for their fine showing at the Peach Bowl despite adverse'\
conditions.
To the Board of Trustees - the "Top of the List" Award
for whatever they did to arouse the great "priority con
troversy."
To the Law School - the "Athlete of the Year'' Award
for their fantastic sweep around right end with their
beautifully staged press conference.
To SGA Constitutional Convention - the "Alfie" Award,
because we're wondering what it's all about - why bother
revising a constitution that doesn't say anything?
To Gonzalo Leon - the "If You Can't Seat Them, Join
Them" Award for eating Slater food with Slater officials
while protesting the Siater Fobd Service.
To the Green Street Methodist Church - the ''Per
sistence Pays" Award for doing something all the
students want to do - get out of the University.
