Gi meet East Car By BRUCE IONICK Sports Editor The Gamecocks of Carolina take to the road tonight for a meeting with East Carolina University at Greenville. N. C. Coach Tom Quinn's Pirates from the Southern Conference are un beaten in three outings with wins over Western Carolina (102-57), Roanoke (79-75) and Atlantic Christian (106-97). Top gun for East Carolina this season has been center Jim Modlin. a 6'7" senior from Jamestown, N. C. Modlin scored 42 points, a school record, in the first game of the season against Western Carolina. But Modlin was held to 10 points in the next contest and guard Tom Miller came to the rescue with 29 points. Miller averages 20.7 points a game while Modlin is top man with a 27 ppg. average. Although Modlin plays the center position. forward Jim Fairley, a 6'7" sophomore from Laurinburg, N. C.. jumps center and is their top "The performa have won. Fairley scores at a 15.7 clip and has been the biggest surprise for the Pirates this season. .Jim Gregory is the other forward and averages 25 points a game. A junior from Elbert. West Va., Gregory has scored 24, 25 and 26 points in the last three outings. He is G'7" and should help Fairley out on the boards against the Gamecocks. The other guard with Miller is 6'1" senior Jim Kiernan from Brooklyn, N. Y. Although he has started the first three games, he is still not a solid starter since the East Carolina bench has a fine line of guards to provide competition at this slot. Coach Quinn said that he feels the pressure is on Carolina since the Gamecocks, in their high ranked position, must win big against the Pirates to merit any attention. Coach Frank McGuire will probably go with the same starting five against the Pirates of East Carolina tonight. John Roche and Bob Cremins will be in the back court. Tom Riker will man the pivot slot while Tom Owens and John Ribock will be at the wings. Owens is the top scorer for Carolina after three games with a ppg. average of 26.3. All-America John Roche is second with a 22 point average. Owens is the top rebounder with a 22.3 rebounds per game average in three starti, considerably better than his 13-plus rebounding average of last year which won him the ACC rebounding crown. Our main objective was to hold Erskine under 50 points." said Frank McGuir.e after his classy Gamecock squad had completely blasted the Erskine "Flying Fleet" out of the water, 95-44. For the 'Cocks, it was a fitting performance after Saturday night's loss. Carolina displayed a devastating offense and aggressive defense against a game but outgunned Erskine with center Tom Owens setting the pace. The 6'10" junior enjoyed one of the finest nights of his career, Aouring in 36 points and capturing 28 rebounds, both of which set new Coliseum records. Tom Riker, the hustling sophomore forward, also con tributed his best night of the young' season by scoring 19 points and gathering in 19 rebounds. Manning leads Biddies By I1YMIE EPSTEIN Sports Writer "This is the first time Winston Salem has been beaten in 17 games. "I thought we were really strong out there tonight," stated fresh man basketball coach Don Walsh after the Battling Biddie's 81-60 victory over Winston-Salem Business College. "We played great together. We really played good. Nobody could have beaten us tonight," said Kevin Joyce. Non-scholarship player Jackie Brown stated, "It's great. The whole game was one big team effort. What can I say with a 3-0 record?" Commenting on the first three games. Walsh stated. "The first part of our season has been a great success. We've played well every game. I can't find any faults with the team, it's all team effort." In the scoring department Casey Manning took top honors with 25 points. Following Casey was Jimmy Powell with 20 points and Kevin Joyce with 17 points. Playing the hoards were Casey Manning and Kevin Joyce. both grabbing 12 rebounds each. Danny Traylor, using his 7-0 height ad vantage. pulled down 10 rebounds.. Both league champs will be represented with Sigma Nu scheduled to start Bob Selby at an offensive line spot and Pat Cun ning, Pete McClausland and Gary Goodman in the defensive secondarv. LaBorde will also start a majority of defensive men in eluding backs Butch McBride, John Lorenzini and guard Oak .Jones. Interior lineman Jim Kerrigan is the lone LaBorde man on offense. Dietzel Coach of Year Coach Paul Dietzel was named the ACC's Coach of the Year for the 1969 season. Dietzel's Carolina Gamecocks won the conference championship this year and will meet West Virginia in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. Dec. 30. This marks the first time that a Carolina football coach has ever won the honor. Dietzel collected 77 votes to win the honor. easily beating out North Carolina's Bill D)ooley. who finished second with 1t; votes. Dietzel won the National Coach of the Year award in 1958 after leading his LSUT Bengals to the national championship. Dietzel serves as athletic director at USC, is president of the ACC Athletic Directors Association and is president of the American Football Coaches Association.
