D ietzel on stac By BRUCE HONICK Sports Editor Paul Dietzel said Wednesday that he thought an announcement would be made "before very long which would tell everyone where we stand and what the situation on the stadium is." The USC athletic director and head football coach said that "any speculation before that is just false because until we know something and have something definite in mind, it just doesn't make any sense to go off half-cocked." A report in The Gamecock two weeks ago said that Carolina Stadium would be modified by 1972 or 1973 to seat approximately 72.00M. "Now there have been some false rumors and some false plans." Dietzel said. "and people have said some things that aren't As The 'Cock File: By Bruce Honici Sports Editor TIE BIG DAY Thanksgiving holidays are o to settle back into the routin, books. Our budget has doubled in four years time since I've been here. During that time the student fees have never changed one iota. The student fees are exactly the same as they were when I came here four years ago." "And the reason for this is that I told the administration that I don't want the students to have to pay for any improvements we have in athletics. And for that reason, the student fee is exactly the same as it was when I arrived on this campus". Dietzel continued, "The thing that has changed is that we have sold more season tickets and our contributions from the Gamecock Club have increased tremen dously. "So any momentum that we've gained has been because of the fact that we have had bigger crowds and the interest of our general fans have increased. The Gamecocks, picked tops in the nation by several leading publications, including Sports Illustrated, will field four starting lettermen from last year's 21-7 squad. All-America guard John Roche will be helped in the backcourt by team captain Bob Cremins. Juniors Tom Owens and. John Ribock will be at the forward slots while sophomore Tom Riker will play pivot. Auburn helped the Gamecocks celebrate the unofficial dedication of Carolina Coliseum last year by losing to the Gamecocks in the final second on a jump shot by .John Roche . 51-49. The Tigers also return four starters from last year's team, which had a 15-10 mark for the season. John Mengelt, a 6'2" guard, was sophomore-of-the-year in the Southeastern Conference last year. Hie averaged 19.7 ppg. and had a high game of 42 points against Kentucky. Center Bill Alexander, '7.scored at a 13.4 ppg. clip and was the leading rebounder for the Tigers. C'arl Shetler (12.9ppg.) and 6' 5" Ron .Jackson (6.5 ppg.) are also hack. Henry Harris, who led the Auhurn's frosh in almost every category last season, is expected to move up to starting status. Auburn won ('ight of 10 games at home last year and recorded wins over NIT entrants Tennessee and Florida nd perennial SEC con tender 'Vanderhiltt. Hosts have most Everyone knows that Carolina will be the host team in the Peach Bowl Dec 30, but do they really know what it means to he the "host team"? According to Coach Paul D)ietzel, the Gamecocks will have the choice of the game ball. The ACC champions will probably select a Wilson Touchdown ball since that Is what they're acc(ustomed to usmng. The Gamnecocks as host team will also have their c'hoice( of uniforms. Dietzel said that Carolina will wear garnet jerseys in the Peach Howl. The athletic director said, "There is no school in the United States that I know of who has any kind of a student body where they can all see the basketball games. It's not possible. "But in a football stadium it's different and I think that you are not justified that the students can't see a football game, so we have guaranteed that they will have a seat in the stadium," Dietzel said. "When you break it down how much a student pays for an athletic contest, it comes to about 40 or 45 cents a contest. Well, obviously we're not making any money from the students. It costs us that much to turn on the lights and clean up the stadium afterwards. "As the student body increases, it means that next year we can't sell as many season tickets as we did this year because I'm going to see to it that every student has a seat in our football stadium," Dietzel said. returns f4 Carver hooks a Sophmore backcourtman Bob shot in last week's intra-sql Cremins and junior Tom Ower WVUw begin to ('ar 111hna ' l'ec JIowAl (opoent, work outs toIda v in) prieparar t ion for 1the1)C i i1)e4':In met g bet ween' the Th'le M~lountai1 n'ers boaist a 9.1I r4cord.t w~Vhiich ranks se'conctid l to the4 inI nl I record1 in) '122. A Carolina bus waited on the Park Street side of Carolina Coliseum at about 1:00 p.m. Soon a car pulled up near the bus and out jumped John Roche, Tom Owens, Bob Carver, Tom Riker and Rick Aydlett. How all those big men were able to fit into the car could be chalked up as a physics problem, but there they were in their red traveling blazers ready for the bus ride to the airport. The rest of the Gamecock squad showed up seconds later. The bus arrived at the airport at 1:40 and about 30 people were standing behind a brick wall near the plane to greet the Gamecocks and give them a good sendoff. By the time the plane was ready to take off, about 100 people were cheering the team on. The players boarded the Southern Airlines Martin 404 seconds after stepping off the bus.
