Dear President Jones:
Through the pages of The
Gamecock I would like to address
you this open letter. The question I
am raising is the following: a few
days ago, the University assigned
special parking privileges to the
resident counselors of Bates House.
Allow me, Dr. Jones, to express
my whole disapproval and raise
my voice against this prejudicious
action of the University, an action
of unfairness, discrimination and
favoritism accorded to a small
fraction of students in Bates
House, called resident counselors.
My questions are many and
burning: why should the
University make available in
dividual parking spaces for these
students? Why are they so
privileged to have their private
parking lots, marked indeed each
parking space for every floor
counselor (fourth floor, fifth floor,
etc.)? It is known that the
University provides two kinds of
parking spaces: one for the staff
and one for the students.
Now there is a third one: that
assigned specifically for the
resident counselors of Bates
House. The paradox. however,
does not end here. The action of the
University made their parking
spaces inviolable. If a student
from Bates House or any student
from the University dares to park
his car in Bates House resident
counselors' private parking, he
gets automatically ticketed.
The University Police has
already given a few parking
tickets. The violation; "no parking
permit zone for..." or. as the of
ficer adds further: "parking in
tenth floor counselors' parking
space." Here we are confronting a
new situation. In addition to the
fact that counselors of Bates
House enjoy their private rooms
and University allowance of $60.00
per month. now they are enforcing
their own parking rules on their
fellow students. My question is:
can the other students tolerate this
kind of situation? Can we. the
students of the University. and. in
this case the students of Bates
House. be fined and pay to the
University $8.00 (this is the
maximum amount of fine for this
violation ) for the sake of five or six
students?
Why should they enjoy such
privileges chartered and sanc
tioned by the University whereas
the rest of the students at Bates
House are so boldly discriminated
against?
The problem becomes even more
complicated; the University has to
employ daily one police officer to
keep an. eye to the students who
dare to park their cars in this
sacred zone! Why should a police
officer spend even half an hour or
less to watch if their parking
spaces are violated by other
students? And this, for the sake of
Bates House's counselors?
The question here is not a
shortage of parking spaces; the

tremendous support the student
body gave the football team during
their win over Clemson University.
They really went all out with
their cheers in a manner I never
dreamed possible and it sounded
great. Clemson played an ex
tremely good game. even con
sidering they were without thE
services of Charlie Waters. ACC
leading pass receiver, and their
efforts should be respected.
I am very proud to be a membei
of the USC student body and oui

sider the action of the University
which discriminatorily assigned
special parking privileges to the
counselors of Bates House.
I would like to see the University
revoke the rights granted to
counselors of Bates House. I also
urge the counselors of Bates House
to renounce their recently
acquired privileges and become a
part of the student body.
It is in your power. Dr. Jones. to
remedy this situation. to see that
our University treats its students.
and particularly those of Bates
House. on an equal. just and fair
basis.

over 30 notices for rides-riders.
Most had already left.
One student hadn't and didn't
expect too. He had a notice:

Tom. Four-day party at Tenament
29--sign here or come over. Free
beer for the first 100 girls."
No one had signed and Tom
wasn't there when we called. His
roommate said he was out buying
beer.
Not again
We goofed again.
In Friday's Gamecock we ran
one story that the pledge classes of
Zeta Tau Alpha and Phi Kappa Psi
built the tiger that was burned that
night.
That was right, but we couldn't
leave it at that.
