USC hosl "Scope '69" was the theme of the annual conference of the South Atlantic Association of Colege and Universities Residence Hails held this summer at the University. SAACURH met August 24-27 at Capstone House. The Region is a sub-region of the National Association and is composed of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Kathy DeLancey, a student at USC, is president of the SAACURH, and Joe Usry, also a student of USC, is the second vice president. Kathy coordinates all communication among member schools and assists in the setting up of special residence hall activities such as Residence Hall Week. Among various other jobs, Kathy is also concerned with the establishment and function of new residence hall governments, especially residence hall judicial systems. She also works on coordinating residence hall systems in general and helps to set up guidelines for a more uniform YR's c new pi Young Republicans need to prepare now for the elections of 1970. According to Charles Undeswood of the Young Republicans Federation, only two per cent of the American people bother to work with political organizations. In election years, he added that four per cent work with the organizations. But as soon as the excitement is over over, they return to a normal pace. "Organizations such as the Young Republicans should be registering people," he said. "They should try to build up their active members. If each person here brought two people to the next college YR meeting, we could triple membership." "The general public is selfish. They just do not care what goes on around them. We tend to build a shell around ourselves. It is up to each person to break out from within and get involved." The state Republicans are working on two projects. The regular project is to work in areas in which the Republican Party is the strongest. The secondary project project, according to Ujnderwood, is to purge bad voting tactics in the areas in which the party is weakest. They want to stop people from voting twice. For example. a student may vote in his college town, and then go home and vote . Underwood added that the Young Republicans should get involved in publicity-seeking projiects. Appeal for projects such as the Hurricane Camille relief fund. Go on television. "The Republicans should try to get their name known." Gamecock Editor Carl Stepp also spoke at the meeting. He stressed that the purpose of a paper is to inform, influence, and entertain. Since the YR's have been con cerned with biased articles, Stepp said that it was up to a reporter to write an. article accurately, the editor to edit the copy, and take out any bias, and the proofreader to catch errors. New concert haill being planned for USC campus Renovations on campus are making rapid progress, according to Harold Brunton, vice-president for student affairs. Under construction is a walkway around the gymnasium and in firmary. The two-story high pedristrian walkway runs form Bates House to the proposed new infirmary. Brunton stated that the work looks confusing now, but will be much simpler when finished. Also in the planning stages is a new concert hail for USC's band, chorus, and orchestra. George W. Wilson and Co. was the low bidder to construct the 7500 square toot structure at the rear of McMaster College. In Thursday's bidding, the Wilson Company bid $l32,792, the lowest of 11 bids. Construction will start next week. The aim of the regional and national organizations is to make residence hall life more meaningful to the student and give each individual student more voice in the policies of the residence government. "Residence halls should be more than just a place to sleep and study; they should be a community of students with common goals and interests working together to . make residence hall life more interesting and meaningful," says Delancey. Specific resolutions have been adopted by the National Association regarding the rights of a student' as a private citizen. Policies have been adopted on such a topic as that of search and seizure. The greatest value of the organization is that it promotes the exchange of information among residence hall governments thereby enabling the various governments to benefit from the mistakes and successes of those groups with problems germain to their own. livulge 0 oojects "There is no place for biased news," added Stepp. "If it happens once, that is too often." Stepp said that The Gamecock had errors in editing this year. "Perhaps too many." "There had been difficulty ad justing to coming out three times a week. Sometimes man-power, tempers, and time is short." He added that The Gamecock staff is open to any student in the University and that no student is turned away who is willing to work. During the meeting Stepp said that The Gamecock had ap proached Young Americans for Freedom and the Young Republicans and asked that they represent the conservative side view on campus by writing a column. Young Republican president Rex Morrow said later that he was working on a column and trying to get others interested in writing some. Underwood asked if any people at the meeting were on the staff and suggested that they join. That way the conservatives would have a part in the paper, according to him. Morrow said that the Young Republicans were trying to in crease membership on campus and were taking stands on such issues as The Gamecock and the Green Street Methodist Church controversy. "Every resident student on this campus is a member of SAACURH and NACURH," says Delancey. "These organizations work to give the resident student a greater voice in student government and should act as the student's means to see that his demands are met by the administration and that his life in the residence hall is more than just existence but instead ex perience." The deadline for application to the Air Force ROTC 2-year program is Nov. 7. Students must have two years left at Carolina to be eligible for the program.
