As a nationwide campus attack
continues on the military in
general, and ROTC programs in
particular, a Carolina ROTC
commander has taken up for his
men.
"We have real good boys. We're
rval protid of our students." says
Col Ifichard S .Johnson. com
mander of the Naval' Reserve
Officers Training Corps here.
NROTC is composed of 241
students, all of whom were chosen
for naval studies. They receive $50
a month, as well as uniforms,
tuition and fees. After -completing
the course of study, graduates
become regular officers,
"receiving the same privileges as
those other officers in the service."
In the past, NROTC has taken a
lead in campus affairs, he said.
For the past seven years NROTC
has led in the annual blood drive.
Col. Johnson, a 29-year veteran
himself, cited more ac

maturity required to assure the
survival of mankind. The first step

both morally and politically to
press for massive world wide
disarmament and then begin to
channel the billions spent annually
on the war machine into a far

program to aid the broken starving
masses of humanity, both friend
and foe the world over.
Indeed, if we choose to survive,
this, in the not too distant future

I thus have much respect for the
students in their quest for peace.
They are to be commended for
superb, realistic idealism and their
unceasing efforts to affirm it. Let
us all hope that their goals are
won.
In total sincerity, however, let
me make it very clear that I also
respect President Nixon's quest
for peace and that of our duly
elected leaders in congress.
Theirs is the official respon
sibility now. Theirs is the burden of
actually terminating the grotesque
conflict. By not signing the petitiQn
I re-affirm my faith in them.
