This continues for the next few ite. hoppger midigh :30, nus Hornhn As The Cock Flies By BRUCE HONICK Sports Editor Bob Fulton, voice of the Gamecocks, was overheard com menting on the return flight from the Roanoke airport Saturday evening that he couldn't remember the last time Carolina was 4 I did a little research and found that in 1956, under Coach Rex Enright, the Gamecocks mastered this feat and went on to a 7-3-0 season. They say history has;a-way of repeating itself, but I kind of hope the 1969 Gamecock season is not an exact duplicato of the 1956 season. In that year Carolina fell to Clemson, 7-0 and did not P- to a bowl game. It's too soon to tell, but the Carolina-Clemson meeting this year could decide .the ACC Championship. The Tigers-are tied with Carolina at the present time as both have unblemished marks in conference play. If 1969 is a duplicate of 1956 then Carolina could lose out on the conference goodies and a bowl game would be out of the question. Since the ACC is one of the weaker conferences for football, a team in this leaque must usually have no more than two losses to be invited to a bowl game. The Gamecocks have already dropped one game this season and although it's possible it's not feasible that Carolina can knock off Tennessee. That's another loss to make the season 8-2-0. That would be sufficient to get a bowl bid, but another loss would shattter all hope unless some fluke occurs. Carolina should be able to get through the rest of the season without a loss with the exception ofjhe Vols up in Knoxville.. Coach Dietzel wants the conference crown as much as anybody and he has a sound strategy as to how to obtain it. His plan is to take every game as it comes and to regard each game as high as they would a Clemson battle. He has set his sights on the Terps this weekend. After Maryland's upset over Duke Saturday, the Terps are going to be flying high as a kite. .It will take a herculean effort to bring them down to earth, but with .the added incentive .of homecoming, Carolina should be able to wrap it up and send it bome.
