You know, at first my reaction was, "Hurrah! At last, Carolina will make a statement...surely, if this is a trend nationwide, peace cannot be distant. For they have called for an end to the war!" Then, my pessimistic and not too-idealistic inner (outer?) self queried, "What does this mean, 'moratorium'?" I'm not really a "liberal," I suppose; I believe that war has its place - perhaps not THIS war. For me, death and needless suffering result in fits of doubt, disquieted conscience. The prospect of only a "tem porary" (moratory) cessation of the war leaves me with no less dread. There can be no viable "post ponement" - there can only be retreat or conquest: defeat (recognized or not) or victory. I am not certain that America can "justly" seek victory in Letters Moi Dear Mr. Stepp: I read with great interest the threats of the Albert Watson chapter of the YAF to keep a watchful legal eye on the actions of students participating in the Vietnam moratorium. I am also amazed at these Young Americans for Freedom and their lack of understanding of freedom itself. I'm not certain that the organizers of the "Vietnam Moratorium: Carolina" are using the term in the sense of "post ponement." More likely, they are calling for the end, or "death," of the conflict. Clarify your purposes for me, fellow "sophomores." Your purpose: If 'tis the "end" of the war - act accordingly. If 'tis only a delay of the battle - and remember, we are in this oriental body to the hilt - then 'tis a dream. Consider this misremembered verse: "We have dreamed down kingdoms, we have dreamed down kings; We have dreamed down death and war, and the end of all Evil Things." They remain. ,atoriun We who are participating in this national effort have had a long time to study this war and what it means to the country and its people. We have, with reason, come to the conclusion that it is a senseless, unjust war. We tire of the dying and of the killing. Having arrived at this opinion, and we realize that it is " ARE TWO! Surely an organization whose standard is freedom cannot deny us this right. The memorial service planned for Oct. 15 here and on campuses all over the nation will be a simple, and I think eloquent. plea to the country to end the war. Those participating are a diverse group, from many af filiations, including the YAF. We have one common purpose, to make our desire for peace known. Our voices will not be loud, nor disruptive, nor offensive. They will unite in a peaceful request for peace. We urge all members of the university community to speak out for peace on this day, or at least to think once again of the problem of war. ION TICE C# luent r certain news articles in his letter to the editor. Personally, I have been quite concerned about the handling of news in your paper since the start of this semester. The vehement anti-administration attitude of your editorial page seems to have poured over into your news ar ticles. Not content to merely lobby for reform, you seem to have tran sformed our school paper into a propoganda piece to be used as a weapon against the ad ministration. Nowhere is the slant of your news articles better illustrated then in your handling of the SCRYM anti-war rally, which received headline treatment for over a week. The administration, aware of the danger of violence on campus, was wading through the ambiguities given them to discover exactly what our campus revolutionaries had planned. You saw nothing more here than an excellent avenue for exerting your own views on campus affairs. Your first article on the rally put on a strapp: by connie Strappy new ones with a y point of view. Your next article gave full play to the SDS charge of administration "unwillingness to cooperate" and showed our administrators as a bunch of bunglers seeking to ruin a legitimate student function. Your "Rally Marred" article clearly painted the administration with its speakers rule as the arch villian plotting to wipe out, at least "mar," student protest. Now at last you have found the issue with which to fuel your anti administration cursade. By refusing to exercise intelligent self-censorship, you have forced President Jones to stop you from printing objectionable obscenity on your front page. I applaud President Jones for his action, but I am ashamed of my school paper. I object to having my fees taken away from me to sup port a propoganda instrument with which I cannot agree.
