Would you b Sej Ry EDDIR CHEN Columnist In the wake of a controversy sweeping across the nation over sex education, a New York psychologist has thrown a new light upon the subject that may revolutionize all current thinking concerning the issue. Dr. Harold Greenwald said recently that enlightened parents today tell their children everythhtg about sex except that it is fun. "Parents explain all the details of sex," he told the American Psychological Association last month. "but never do they explain that it is exquisitely pleasurable." "They make sex sound like some co;nplicated psychological exercise that for some strange reason, has to be sanctioned by a host of irrelevant factors," he said. And parents are not the only ones who 'have eliminated the fun element out of sex, Dr. Greenwald complained. Society itself, he contends, is "bidden to perceive sex as a form of communication', as re generation, as anything but what it now usually is for man, civilized man - a form of play." However, with the perfection of birth control techniques, sexual relations no longer have biological functions, he said. "With the grim seriousness that's characteristic of our profession," he noted, "par ticularly those of us engaged in the study of sexual behavior, play has been one of the most neglected human activities." (take note, all you psychology majors.) Much of today's generation gap, he believes, exists that has been around the issue of pleasure. Among the "aversive stimuli" ultilized by those "who are in terested in controlling their ten dIoncies to casual encounters," he sJid. are: "It shows a lack of com mitment," "It shows a defense against feelings of sexual inadequacy," "It is a reaction formation against 4eepseated fears of homosexuality. And when one reaches the proper age. Greenwald says, the "stimulus becomes "you are a dirty old man." We at Sims Dormitory agree strongly with this statement. As a matter of fact, we would like to enjoy our rooms very much. It is impossible to relax or think with a loudspeaker blaring in our ears constantly. Advertisements on the loudspeaker should be in formative and definitely not an noying. We hear time and time again about how unspirited Carolina fans are. What in the hell do Carolina fans have to be spirited about? We have a bunch of damn clowns that try to pass for a football team. We have a coach that spends so much time praising the opponent and cutting down the so called "team" that he doesn't have time to coach. I Studies program at the University. The Black Studies program is only a figment of the editor's imagination. But, even if it were a reality, at this racist institution it would be impossible for Black Studies to fulfill its major purpose - - that of nation building. It is clear to me that the ob jective of the few black courses offered at USC is merely the ap peasement of black students, rather than the building of a viable nation. With the recent emphasis on black heritage it has become all too easy for us to devote our entire time to a vain effort to convince. white people that black people have made notable achievements. Of course I would be pleased to learn of the genius in black thought during the third century before Christ, yet I fail to understand how this will change the lives of the naked, hungry black children dying of poverty in America. But as Fanon states, "My life should not be devoted to drawing up the balance sheet of Negro values. I am not a prisoner of history. I should not seek there for the meaning of my destiny. I am my own foundation. And it is by going beyond the -Mstorical, in strumental hypothesis that I will initiate the cycle of my freedom." It is for this reason that we must turn our attention to the development of skills which will satisfy the needs of a nation. Any educational program which does not seek to fulfill these ends can not justifiably be called a Black Studies program. Velma Love L team around and look worse than a bunch of cheerleaders. I think that it is time for Mr. Dietzel to resign or else be fired. It is about time for Carolina fans to stand up and demand that we quit giving the bunch of clowns that we are giving a free ride through college to at least attempt to try to pay back the school and the fans for that free ride. With the very definite exception of Warren Muir and possibly one or two other players we don't have a football team. Coach, give the fans something to sdbrt and then maybe you INill see some support.
