To the first-time spectator
Rugby can be a confusing game,
resembling a hybrid between
American football, soccer,
basketball, and king-of-the
mountain.
First of all the basics: there are
15 men to a team-eight forwards
and seven backs, all trying to score
a touchdown, known as a "try!"
Any man may kick, run, or pass
the ball. The ball may be kicked
and run forward but may only be
passed backward.
No blocking is allowed; so a
runner is left entirely to his own
devices, which often means
lateralling to another runner just
before being tackled.
Unlike American football, play is

Hepzibah, Ga., and fullback
Warren Muir of Fitchburg, Mass,
will serve as South Carolina's
game captains Saturday afternoon
when the football Gamecocks meet
the Georgia Bulldogs in Sanford
Stadium in Athens.
Chavous is a versatile 6-2, 183
pound performer who has filled in
at several positions for the
Gamecocks, performing as a
halfback, split end, defensive
halfback and safety during his USC
playing career. Born in Augusta,
Ga., he attended Butler High there
and lettered for the Gamecocks in
1967.
League open

Anyone interested in bowling in
the Intra-Carolina League should
go to Star Lanes Tuesday at 4:30
p.m.
This league is open to all men
and women of Carolina and from it
will be selected both a men and
women's bowling team to
represent the University in in
tercollegiate competition.

carrier is tackled he must release
the ball immediately, to be picked
up by whichever team can out
scramble the other.
The line-out, which resembles a
basketball Jumpball, is used to get
the ball into play after it has been
kicked or run out of bounds.
The "scrum" is the mass of
players huddled together either in
a set position or around a loose
ball. The scrum-half rolls the ball
in at their feet, and the opposing
scrums shove each other back and
forth across the turf until one side
manages to "heel" the ball back to
their side.
There are three basic ways to
score in Rugby. A "try",
analogous to a touchdown in
football, is worth three points and

the Gamecocks' fourth best career
rusher with 1,386 yards and was
recently elected by Gamecock fans
and alumni as fullback on the all
time South Carolina football
team.

ground in the opponents' end zone.
The second way to score is the
conversion after a try. This is
worth two points. It involves a
place kick from a point directly
opposite the spot where the try was
scored (touched down).
The third methodof scoring is the
field goal, which is worth three
points. The field goal, like the
conversion, involves a place kick,
and is taken from the spot of a
major penalty. It is also possible to
score a field goal by means of a
running drop-kick at any time
during play.
Perhaps the most confusing
aspect of Rugby for the spectator,
and indeed for the neophyte
player, is the matter of penalties.
To simplify, penalties can be
lead way
Paul Dietzel, Muir rushed for 805
yards as a sophomore and 460
yards as a junior. During 1968, he
was hampered by injuries, the first
of which was sustained against the
Bulldogs in last season's clash.
Muir, a civil engineering major,
is married with two small sons.
Also married and with one child,
Chavous is a pharmacy major.

Minor violations include the
"knock-on" when the ball is not
caught cleanly or when it is passed
forward. The result is that a set
scrum is called at the point of
infraction and the ball is put into
play by the nonoffending side.
Incidently, scrums are also
called when play has become
hopelessly piled up on the field.
More serious offenses such as
failing to release the ball when
tackled, hands in the scrum, and
off-sides, result in a penalty kick
for the nonoffending side.
"Hands in the scrum" refers to
the rule against using anything but
one's feet to move the ball when it
is in the midst of the scrum.
Finally, off-sides refers to one's
position in relation to the ball. The
off-sides line is the imaginary line
across the field wherever the ball
is in play.
For instance if the forward who
catches the ball in the line-out
chooses to hold it instead of
passing to the backs, any member
of the opposing team who breaks
past the player with the ball is off
sides.
Intramural
activities
The Married Students clinched a
convincing win by routing the
Horseshoe contingent, 45-6. Webb
led the winners with 14 points on
two touchdowns and two extra
points.
Bray scored one TD and one PAT
for the Married Students while
Tilton, Farkas and Mehrle each
got one touchdown.
Bubba Williams uncorked six TD
passes and three extra point
passes for the MS cause.
Baker shut out Burney, 25-0;
Douglas eeked out a 7-6 victory
over Preston; and Maxcy took an
18-12 decision over Bates House
No. 2.
Hardy scored three touchdowns
and Jacoby added seven points to
give Moore a shutout over Bates
House No. 1, 25-0.
LaBorde relied upon Sherlock's
three TDs and two by Appel to
defeat the Town Men, 30-6.
