Carolina students rudely shun
GIs visiting the campus, a group of
Ft. Jackson soldiers complained
Saturday.
Clustering around the cement
benches beneath the Russell House
ramp, the soldiers grinned
amiably from beneath caps of
closely shaven hair.
Said one, a graduate in
marketing at a northern univer
sity, "We're marked as soon as we
step on campus." He pointed to his
head.
"But heck, we're no different
than most of the guys here," said
another, a former student at San
Jose State.
Why do they come to the cam
pus?
"Just to try to remember what
it's like to be a civilian again," said
a hulking, round-eyed in
fantryman.
"Yeah," said another sar
castically, "we like watching
civilians having fun."
"The way the people look at us is
really' wild." said the smallest of
the group as he hitched up his bell
bottomed trousers. "Guess they
don't see this kind of clothes
around here much."

MERMAID RUSH
Mermaid Fleet rush applications
must be turned in to the Naval
Armory by Wednesday.
Lt. Com. Daly, Mermaid ad
viser, will accept the applications,
which may be obtained at the
Russell House information desk,
the dorm desks or from the Mer
maids.
The Mermaid Fleet is an
auxiliary organization of the Navy
ROTC established to promote
scholarship and leadership among
the members of the ROTC
program.
Oct. 14 the Fleet will have a tea
for the applicants at 7:30 in the
Russell House. Applicants will be
notified of the room number. Oct.

near McKissick Library after
allegedly having been denied
entrance to the Physical Science
buildings, said, "These people, our
own age, just don't seem to
realize.. .the 'Fighting Man's
Code."
"Man, that first article says it
all," he said. He recited, "I am an
American fighting man; I serve in
the forces which guard and protect
my country and our way of life. I
am prepared to give my life in
their defense."
Water safety
course open
All water safety instructors are
urged to enroll in the Red Cross
Water Safety Retraining Course to
be held Oct. 12 and Oct. 19 at the
USC swimming pool from 9 a.m. to
1 p.m.
According to Jimmy Ratliff, a
Physical Education Instructor, the
program will consist of two five
hour sessions. "The purpose of this
retraining program is to inform
swimming instructors in the
Columbia area of the new changes
in life saving, such as the new
rescue techniques that have been
added."
The Red Cross program will
supplement the regular thirty-hour
course in water safety. To enroll in
the program current water safety
instructors should call 765-2991 for
information.
Also enrollment remains open in
swimming classes for adults and
children at USC. There will be two
classes for children. Intermediate
swimmers will meet from 7 to 8
p.m. each Tuesday followed by
precompetitive swimming from 8
to 9 p.m. Swimming class for
adults will meet Thursdays from
7:30 to 9 p.m.
Persons interested in enrolling
may register by attending the next
class meeting or by contacting the
College of General Studies.
