Dear Mr. Stepp:
We, as students at USC, have
seen semesters come and go, and
as they go we realize that the
students have been duped again.
Once again we have paid our
activity fees and once again the
Student Union has used the money
kindly provided by the students to
present musical entertainment.
Now this is all fine except that the
Student Union fails to realize that
the students have very diversified
interest and the Student Union fails
to meet its obligation to try to
please as many of its constituents
as possible.
Last year the only non-soul
groups to appear were the nothing
Rascals and "Ten Years Ago", as
the Gamecock dubbed them. Ten
Years After, in the opinion of
many was the only group worth
seeing that appeared at our
progressive University last year.
I was among the lucky few to see
them. For those of you who were
not here last year or who still do
not know they played let me assure
you they did play and gave an
excellent performance (more than
can be said for the Four Tops.)
Last year the only promotional
consideration given Ten Years
After was a few dozen small
stickers and a small box in the

More letters
Since last Wednesday, The
Gamecock has received more than
20 letters on its "dirty word"
controversy. We have run most of
them. However, space limitations
prevent us from running all the
remaining letters here, so we think
it unfair to run any.
Briefly, of the eight letters we
have not printed, three generally
support The Gamecock, three
generally support the ad
ministration action, and two are

proclaiming that "Ten Years
Ago" was coming.
We do not demand that all
concerts at USC be by Hard-Rock
or Blues groups. We realize that
many students are qtill soul
orientated.
All we ask is that a represen
tative number of concerts be given
by Hard-Rock and Blues bands.
We think this only fair t the
growing number of music lovers at

As we have intimated on these
pages before, it takes quite an
issue to arouse the Carolina
student body.
As could have been predicted,
the students were aroused
Saturday night. Unfortunately, we
think, they were more aroused by
the playing of "Dixie" than they
were by the re:st of the events,
excluding our two touchdown
plays.
The issue of "Dixie.' was dealt
with extensively last year, but it
seems traditions die very slowly in
the land of cotton. As a matter of
fact, it seems that traditions don't
die at all.

Compliment
Dear Mr. Stepp:
I must pay a public compliment
to the committee that has selected
and offered the university Film
Series this year. Conscious of the
fact that they are parts of a
community that exists in order to
stretch the minds of its members,
they have resisted pressure to glut
oour cultural life with more visual
muzak.
The films are odd, problematical
and even if boring or downright
bad-they merit attention. And
serious attention these films are
getting-from large and politely
tolerant spectators, many of whom
have not been exposed to evidence
that film should be thought
provoking art rather than common
pop.

Regard for law
Dear Mr. Stepp:
In nmy first three weeks at
Carolina I have come to the
realization that the administration
of Carolina does not care for the
students, has never taken a course
in business administration, and
has no regard for the law.
After putting up with antiqued
registration methods, poor food
service at high prices, inadequate
maintenance of buildings and
unrealistic football ticket
procedures, the thing that most
perturb)s me is the apparent
disregard of the director of housing
for the law by trying to avoid
fulfilling a number of binding
contracts.
These contract pertain to the
rental of refrigerators from the
director of housing by (he residents
of the Men's Towers. This seems to
be a flagrant violation of the law,
and if these contracts are not
fulfilled this week. I feel that the
residents of the Towers should take
the issue through whatever
channels necessary.

Fraternity rush finally ended
last Saturday with pledging on
McBryde Quadrangle.
To the normal fraternity man,
pledging, and all the excitement
that goes along with it, seemed the
same as in past years. However, in
the eyes of the IFC officers and
delegates it just wasn't the same
old Rush Week. Like it or not the
Greek System at Carolina is suf
rering.
Some believe this to be a result of
USC's debut as a major university
in the United States, and the a
Greek system doesn't mix with
such an institution.
This is historically untrue, and
has been proven at many
universities larger than Carolina,
such as Penn State, University of
Massachusetts, and Southern
Illinois and Georgia.
This decline also be blamed on
the lack of attractive housing for
fraternities. Although important, I
don't consider this to be of over
powering significance.
Perhaps the real answer lies in
the very heart of the system rush.
Fraternity rush has been crippled
by a myriad of rules and
regulations. It has been squeezed
into a very short time period. And
it has done much to strip the in
dentity of both the fraternity man
and the rushee.
However, fraternity men can
find some consolation in the fact
that their rush is a whole lot bet ter,
off than sorority rush at Carolina.
The girls have a series of
glorified tea parties and irrelevant
skits spread out over ten days. The
major emphasis is on not getting to
know your potential sister, since
you can only speak to her a couple
of hours a day.
But there is still hope for

We would expect from the
academic community more
thought and insight than that
evinced by the public display of
this cloth relic of yesterday's
mistakes. We can feel a little
sympathy for the state legislators

fraternities. Burt Rosen, president
of the IFC, is in the process of
forming a rush evaluation com
mittee which will hopefully lead to
a completely new and more ap
propriate rush.
Fraternities are composed of
men, and men are obtained in
rush. This is why it is so important
that a new rush be implemented.
The fraternity system in the past
has added much to our Carolina
Community. It's fate shall be
decided in the immediate future.

The flags and the song remind
us, not of the conflict between
brothers of blood, but of the con
flict between brothers of
humanity. The only war in this
issue is the overt and calculated
subjugation of men by their
brothers.
The issue was not ended by the
national conflict of the last cen
tury, but merely driven un
derground. The greatest test of the
twentieth century is to forget the
prejudices of 200 yeaars, and to
forgive the injustices of those
years.
We'have not dealt with those
questions in South Carolina.
We can barely bring up the subject
before our people are polarized
into two groups of tense, throbbing
warriors. We will never be able to
rationally discuss the matters if we
do not sensitize ourselves to the
needs and fears of the opposite
side.
In many places there is open
warfare between the races. That is
not the case here, but only because
neither side has sufficient
organization to begin the con
flict.
Before this can happen each
of us must look at his viewpoint
and question his motives. If we are
trying to hide our fears behind a
supposed superiority we must look
at the situation more closely and
seek to bridge the gap. If we are

These are not easy directions to

America."
The course is a study of various
Black authors and their styles,
works and environments which
have stimulated creativity. Among
these authors are James Baldwin,
Gwendolyn Brooks, Ralph Ellison,
LeRoi Jones, Phyllis Wheatley and
Richard Wright.
"We want to give the students a

literature, so that they will find
what they like," comments
Professor James W. Luck, in
structor of the course.
At present there are only nine
students in the course.
