A surprise
Arts school

Hilton Head Island has ex
pensive hotels -- hamburgers are
$1.50.
It also has had exciting en
tertainment -- for the past three
years. USC's summer school of the
arts.
The joint venture of the art and
theatre departments has been
"very profitable." said Russell
Green. director of Theatre.
The profit is in more than money,
Green said. Of the thirty students
who took part in last summer's
program. only half were from

given than courses in drama or
parts in plays -- a subtle recruiting
drive for the University.
The agreement for the program,
between the University and Sea
Pines plantation, has two more
years to run, and Green sees no
reason why the highly successful
program should stop then.
For educational affairs, it was
also a resounding success, Green
said. Besides producing, prac
ticing and performing plays, the
students attended classes in drama
and the theatre.

Hilton Head has housed the
program from the beginning, and
the profit to Hilton Head is there
too. Paying the cost of the
program. Sea Pines has purchased
a unique cultural attraction.
Working in the program, the
students have obtained a unique
educational experience.

Overwhelming praise greeted I
the USC Concert Choir during most I
of its European tour. I
But it was only wet horse
blankets in one small Portugese f
village.
Bass singer Don Sanders ex- a
plained that the choir was touring I
a castle on the mountain above the <
village of Sintra when they were
caught in a downpour. The only t
access to the castle is by hor- <
seback.
Members of the choir protected I
themselves from the drenching t
rain with the blankets the horses
wore on the way up.
Sanders said that it made quite t
an impression. r
The choir performed in six C
European countries during their
three-week tour: Portugal, Spain, N
France, the Netherlands, West
Germany and England. t
The group, accompanied by
several faculty members and their
wives, and directed by Prof. Arpad 4
Darazs, traveled 10,000 miles by I
air, bus and even a riverboat up I
the Rhine River.
The group was greeted 1

ormance in Irch, Germany, was
ierhaps the biggest success of the
our.
The choir listened to a concert by
ifteen German choral groups in a
ircus tent and were asked to sing
nd the exceptional praise con
,inced them that they were the hit
f the evening.
In Leiden, in the Netherlands,
he sexton of the cathedral where a
,oncert was to be held assured the
roup that no applause had been
eard there for centuries. A
remendous standing ovation
oncluded the show.
The Dutch and Portugese
roadcasting networks televised
ationally performances in those
ountries. In Paris, the Voice of
Lmerica broadcast the choir
iorldwide.
The trip was the first overseas
Dur by a USC group.
The American consul general in
rnsterdam was so taken with the
:hoir's success that he wrote a
eport to the Department of State
ecommending that the group be
;ent to areas where American good
vill is badly strained.
