By HYMIE EPSTEIN

"The USC Intramural Program
is designed to give every student
the opportunity to participate in
some form of competitive
athletics. Our program allows
each individual to develop a spirit
of loyalty and cooperation, in
addition to keen competition,"
commented Tom Webb, director of
intramurals, on the Intramural
League.
This year the Intramural League
will consist of 29 teams, 15 fater
nity teams and 14 independent
teams composed of residence
halls.
Twelve sports will highlight this
year's competition. They are:
football, basketball, softball,
bowling, swimming, track, golf,
vollyball, putt-put, ping-pong,
tennis and badminton.
The football competition will
begin September 24. Games this
year will be played at night on
the lighted fields. A playoff this
year is scheduled for the two top
teams in the fraternity league and
in the independent leagues. The
two champs of the leagues will
th?n meet each other in the In
tramural Super Bowl.
Besides running the Intramural
ague, the Intramural office also
upplies recreation for the men of
arolina. The recreation includes
he Longstreet Gym. the swim
ing pool and all types of sporting
uipment.
Any resident of a dorm can
participate in his dorm's team. A
non-resident of another dorm can
play on another team only when his
dorm doesn't have a team. To join
a team contact the dorm managers
or call the Intramural office at
8126. Tentative hours are from 3 to

ride Ratteree said. "This year 19
)n-scholarship boys came out for
ie team but only seven boys have
uck it out. One of the boys could
ave a shot at starting."
With the first game still two
,eeks away, the "Battling Bid
ies" are still involved in three
Dur practices to determine the
tarting squad. The main problem
t this time is the positioning of
layers.
"Finding out where each boy
tould play and distributing of
ayers is our main problem right
w," Ratteree said. We have lots
'fullbacks this year and only or
fensive end. We are trying boy
different positions -- making
rmer backs into linemen."
"With class just starting the
ayers can't really concentrate on
otball, anyway."
The freshmen play a five-game
hedule which will open Oct. 2
,ainst Ratteree's old alma mater,
e Citadel at home.
Last year the biddies racked up a
rfect 5-0 season so some title
fen(4- will be in order.
The ' man squad is the
nallest, numerically, at the
amecock Roost in quite a few
ars. However, the 30 scholarship
hletes on the freshman roster are
-lieved to be one of the most
lented groups ever recruited by
iuth Carolina. Of the 37 players.
